“The Change-Up” is a raunchy adult film with its seldom comical moments

It’s a freaky version of ‘Freaky Friday’. Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds are best buds in “The Change-Up”. Bateman is Dave Lockwood an over achiever who is in a rut at home as a father of two infant twins and a young daughter who seems to need a break. Reynolds as Mitch Planko, Dave’s best bud who is living a life of no job or real life concerns. Doing what he wants, when he wants and never having to answer to anyone.

When the boys get together for a guys night things get weird. After they both take a leak in a fountain and make a wish to switch lives they wake up in the morning in someone else’s skin. After freaking out they do everything they can to switch back. Eventually with no help in sight and realizing they will be stuck like this for awhile Dave insists Mitch man up and start committing to things. He needs to take care of his family while he can’t and follow through at his work on the possible promotion he may be getting.

Mitch reciprocates Dave’s request when he asks him to go to his auditions and keep his single lifestyle booming. As the days go by there is only so much each man can do to keep their switch a secret. With career and family ties on the line the change is not everything either man expected it to be and both find themselves dying to switch back.

“The Change-Up” is a raunchy adult film with its seldom comical moments. I enjoyed it as a parent, but found some of the ideas outlandish. I found Mitch’s character very unbelievable. I can’t fathom that there is anyone really that dumb. The things they made Mitch incapable of doing were ridiculous. I loved Bateman. He stole the show and was the best part of every scene. “The Change-Up” was a little mixed up and could use some improvement but had some solid comical parts that make it worth the viewing.

Drag Me to Hell, Land of the Lost, and The Proposal out today!

Two good ones and one bad…You Pick!

The Proposal: When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

Land of the Lost: Space-time vortexes suck. Has been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, is sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world. Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly and a redneck survivalist named Will. Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally — a primate called Chaka to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they’re heroes. Get stuck, and they’ll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost.

Drag Me to Hell: Christine Brown is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton. Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan.

Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks, and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.

In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas to save her soul from eternal damnation.

To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: How far will she go to break free of the curse?

Easy Virture, Wolverine and Next Day Air.

Three films with a variety of targetted audiences. Something for every personality. Hitting the Red Box and available for purchase today on DVD are:

X-Men Origins: Wolverine: Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar – as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws and a primal fury. Leading up to the events of X-Men, X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells the story of Wolverine’s epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe whose appearances in the film series have long been anticipated.

Next Day Air: A haze-brained courier (Faison) sparks off a chain of uproarious events after he mistakenly delivers a package containing some high grade product to the wrong address and into the hands of two bumbling, wannabe gangsters (Epps and Harris). But these two fools have no clue that their neighbors down the hall — the REAL gangster and his feisty girlfriend — are connected to the Mexican mob and will do whatever it takes to recover their package.

Easy Virtue: The twenties have roared… the thirties have yet to swing. John Whittaker, a young Englishman, falls madly in love with Larita, a sexy and glamorous American woman, and they marry impetuously. However when the couple returns to the family home, his mother Mrs. Whittaker has an instant allergic reaction to her new daughter-in-law.

Larita tries her best to fit in but fails to tiptoe through the minefield laid by her mother-in-law. Larita quickly realizes Mrs. Whittaker’s game and sees that she must fight back if she’s not going to lose John. A battle of wits ensues and sparks soon fly. Mrs. Whittaker manipulates every situation to undermine her, while Larita remains frustratingly calm and engineers sassy counter attacks.

Before long, Mrs. Whittaker’s manipulation starts to work on John and Larita feels their love is in danger of slipping away.

Duplicity, Sunshine Clearing, Fighting and Adventureland.

A good selection for the weekend. A romcom, 70s love story, action, and comedy…something for everyone. Out Tuesday:

Sunshine Clearing: Once the high school cheerleading captain who dated the quarterback, Rose Lorkowski now finds herself a thirty something single mother working as a maid. Her sister Norah is still living at home with their dad Joe, a salesman with a lifelong history of ill-fated get rich quick schemes.

Desperate to get her son into a better school, Rose persuades Norah to go into the crime scene clean-up business with her to make some quick cash. In no time, the girls are up to their elbows in murders, suicides and other…specialized situations. As they climb the ranks in a very dirty job, the sisters find a true respect for one another and the closeness they have always craved finally blossoms.

By building their own improbable business, Rose and Norah open the door to the joys and challenges of being there for one another — no matter what — while creating a brighter future for the entire Lorkowski family.

Adventureland: From the director of Superbad comes Adventureland, a smart, witty comedy we can all relate to. When James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) has to cancel his dream summer vacation and make some money for grad school, the only job he can get is at Adventureland, a tacky amusement park where the games are rigged and the rides make you hurl. But it’s where he meets Em (Kristen Stewart, Twilight), and his rollercoaster ride to nowhere turns into the best summer ever.

Fighting: Small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) knows firsthand that every day in New York City is a struggle to survive. So when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) gives him a chance to be something more in the brutal underground world of bare-knuckle street-fighting, Shawn decides that he has something worth fighting for and puts everything on the line to win. Every knockout brings him closer to the life he’s always wanted, but also traps him in a dangerous web he can’t escape.

Duplicity: Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts and Clive Owen star as two sexy spies-turned-corporate operatives who attempt to pull off one of the biggest heists ever. As the stakes rise in the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse, they’ll put everything on the line to remain one double-cross ahead of the rest.

I was engaged by the fiery chemistry between Reynolds and Bullock.

Summer has blossomed its first romantic comedy of the season, and fireworks are going to fly! In “The Proposal” Sandra Bullock stars as Margaret, a tough as nails boss who is a force to be reckoned with. She seems especially hard on her assistant Andrew portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, who is at her side at all times. Margaret’s life revolves solely around her career as an editor; because of this her citizenship is jeopardized when her Visa is denied. With few options available and on the spur of the moment to save her job Margaret informs her boss that her assistant Andrew proposed to her. Obviously stunned Andrew follows suit knowing any objection could cost him his job.

Margaret is oblivious to what the repercussions could be for this lie and the possibility of jail time for both parties. After visiting immigration services to inform the officer of their pending nuptials he informs the pair of the possible punishments. Also informing them he will watch their every move, interview co-workers, family and friends, eventually holding separate meetings with the newlyweds to quiz them on their knowledge about each other. Attempting to learn everything in the matter of a week seems to be a struggle for Margaret as she knows nothing about Andrew. Andrew proves to Margaret working as her right hand man has taught him much of what he needs to know about who she is.

Following the meeting the duo travels away to Alaska for the weekend to visit Andrew’s parents. Once their Margaret learns a few secrets about Andrew and is intrigued. As the weekend goes on we see Margaret let her guard down as she lets Andrew’s family become her family. From the first kiss the “couple” shares we see sparks fly.

“The Proposal” is a charming film, truly entertaining and comical all the way to the closing credits. It fills the time wisely and offers no fillers. Nothing was predictable about this film, as it leaves you wondering where Andrew’s heart really lies and how Margaret feels. Fiery chemistry between Reynolds and Bullock was amazing. Ryan Reynolds brings the naturally charming and comical side, while Sandra Bullock showed a different side as the diva with an attitude. “The Proposal” is going to be this summer’s romantic comedy blockbuster. I was engaged by this film and can’t wait to see it again. I propose you not to enjoy it!

Hugh Jackman is headed to Tempe, AZ where hundreds of people are camped out for the premiere of “X-Men Origins : Wolverine”. Tempe, Arizona’s residents, schools, businesses, and a major cinema emporium are pulling out all the stops to prepare for the World Premiere set for April 27, at Harkins Temple Marketplace 16.

The Tempe Hometown Premiere will have all the trappings of a mega-Hollywood event including red carpet arrivals, klieg lights, screaming fans, paparazzi and media coverage of the film’s stars headed by Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman and including Liev Schreiber, Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, will.i.am and director Gavin Hood.

Following a hard-fought contest stretching over thousands of cities and towns across the United States, Tempe emerged triumphant in a far-reaching, citywide bid to nab the gala event. Mayor Hugh Hallman himself rallied the community, which stepped up with dozens of videos that were posted on YouTube.

Now Tempe residents are lining up at the Harkins multiplex every day before and after work, to get the latest information about obtaining tickets to the event. Harkins Theatres is donating the entire complex – 16 auditoriums – to hold the expected throngs, and theater management is making sure the complex is in peak condition for the gala. The Arizona State University marching band, which will entertain premiere patrons, is rehearsing and finalizing its playlist; the university mascot, the sun devil “Sparky” is coming up with some new moves just for the event; and the school’s cheerleaders are practicing routines dedicated to Hugh Jackman and the rest of the cast.

Local business and Tempe-based franchisees are “slashing” prices to mark the event – and Tempe fans of the Wolverine and X-Men comics and movie universes are hard at work on their “adamantium” claws and growing their mutton chop sideburns.

The “Origins” of the event came from Hugh Jackman, who plays the famed antihero in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE. Jackman wanted to express his appreciation to the fans by hosting the premiere, in which he will bring the movie and a few of his “friends and enemies” from the film to Tempe.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, the first chapter in the X-Men saga, unites Wolverine with several other legends of the X-Men universe, in an epic revolution that pits the mutants against powerful forces determined to eliminate them. Twentieth Century Fox releases the film everywhere May 1st.

What a great way to mark Valentine's Day in this new classic love story.

Any child who has been through a divorce has questions regarding his or her parent’s relationship, and how they fell in love. In “Definitely, Maybe,” eleven year old Maya (Abigail Breslin) wants to learn about how “fate” brought her parents together. In order to discover how her parents met, Maya quizzes her father Will (Ryan Reynolds). Will agrees to reveal all, but he decides to answer her questioning, and tell his story, by making a game of it. He makes a game of it by changing the names of the women he dated so that she does not figure out who her real mother is in his story.

His story to Maya actually begins when he was in college, where he was working as an aspiring political consultant. He meets “Emily” (Elizabeth Banks), who would become his college sweetheart, with whom he parts ways on his jump start to his career New York City. Once in New York, Will encounters “April” (Isla Fisher), the copy girl at the presidential candidates campaign headquarters. April is a strange girl that captures Will’s attention and gains his friendship. No matter what Will’s ride of life brings, she is his friend throughout it all, Her feelings soon develop into more than just friendship, and it seems possible that April is Maya’s mother. Then, along comes “Summer” (Rachel Weisz), an old friend of Will’s former girlfriend Emily, who makes a play for Will. He quickly falls for Summer, eventually wanting to commit to her. Then his dream is ditched when Summer betrays him to further her own career.

With a little help of Will’s daughter Maya, I found myself following each step in Will’s life, leading up to the revelation of his true love. In the end, we are left with a beautiful love story, illustrating the bond between a father and his child. This film is a heartfelt hilarious romantic comedy. Get carried away with a loved one in the romantic tale that Definitely, Maybe has to present. What a great way to mark Valentine’s Day in this new classic love story.
