Heartbreaking honesty with the challenge of finding the light in a very dark story.

A marriage is falling apart in “Blue Valentine” and every emotion you will feel as they tell their story. Michelle Williams is Cindy the wife who finds herself out of love with her husband Dean, portrayed by Ryan Gosling in this romantic drama. The story unfolds in segments as you relive the lover’s life together. It has been love at first sight for Dean whose courtship begins with Cindy after some wooing. The pair quickly ignites sparks, but things come to a sudden halt when Cindy announces to Dean she is expecting and the baby is not his.

The news does not faze Dean who is in love with Cindy and he proposes marriage to her and a family that both have always dreamed of. With butterflies aflutter the two tie the knot and start of on the journey of married life together. Finding along the way things are not always as romantic. The mundane of real life sets in and the two begin to feel the divide.

“Blue Valentine” is told in sections and flashbacks. In the past we see two lovers who can’t take their eyes off each other and in the present a wife who is very unhappy and a husband who is at a lost of what to do and desperate to keep his family. It is obvious that Dean has faced some struggles through the years and the details of why the marriage is failing are not made apparent, but you can see the divide and feel the pain both are experiencing.

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling had one of the best performances of the year. Their real life suffering was so believable and captivating. “Blue Valentine” hones in on relationships and how quickly couples are to fall in love and fall out of love. People change over time and you can’t always do something to repair those changes and “Blue Valentine” displays that to perfection. Heartbreaking honesty with the challenge of finding the light in a very dark story. “Blue Valentine” is not for the romantics, but for those wanting to see true performances and story telling at it’s best.

“How Do You Know” not to waste money on this film? Because half of the reviewing community is telling you not to.

“How Do You Know” that this movie is not all that great. Wait till about half way through and then ask for a refund. With comical geniuses on board it is a surprise that this film could not be saved. Paul Rudd is George a corporate businessman who is being investigated for illegal trades. He is employed at his father’s (Jack Nicholson) company, which causes a conflict. George is left alone to hire his own attorney and is wished well as any further communication could jeopardize them.

Reese Witherspoon is Lisa, a US softball player whose dreams are crushed when she is cut from the team. She turns to her no strings attached boyfriend Matty (Owen Wilson) looking for someone not to care. The last thing she wants or needs is pity and compassion, but what she gets from Matty is something that not even she is ready to commit to.

George and Lisa go on a blind date as both their lives are falling apart and even with as bad as their first blind and silent date is, George reaches out to Lisa to meet up again and the two begin to have a friendship that grows. The relationship is strange between George and Lisa and George and his father. The film picks up many stories that are not necessary…for example George’s possible indictment that makes him realize his possible future with Lisa who is in a relationship. Or the forced father son relationship between George and his father.

“How Do You Know” is a meager romantic comedy that never finds a smooth way to show the love. I found myself asking many questions when it was over as they opened many doors and never closed them. There was way too much going on for one simple romcom and no resolution from it. “How Do You Know” not to waste money on this film? Because half of the reviewing community is telling you not to.

By day I’m a social worker at a psychiatric hospital caring for mentally ill patients and at night I care for my 2 year old son. Any breaks I can get and tend to myself are greatly appreciated. I have a couple of single mom friends who are in similar situations.

Denise: With all the day-to-day commotion of kids, school, work and significant others my sisters and I don’t have much time to connect. Stealing away to a movie is always a wonderful diversion and treat!

Lisa: We are all divorced and never get out. All we do is work and pay bills. If we leave a seat between us and Mr. right walks in we can offer him a seat.

Melissa: We are single moms of preschoolers…enough said! LOL!!!

Kim: I had surgery just after Christmas; with all of the snow and frigid weather I haven’t seen my friends since Christmas. We love movies and go to them often as a group. We would LOVE to spend an evening at the movies and have time to catch up with each other!

Germean: My one of best girlfriends needs a nite out. She has a special needs child that she just had to place in a facility after caring for her by herself for years and she is having a hard time with this decision. She deserves to a nice out with her girls.

Sherry: the kids and the dog!

Karen: girls all need to get out to share the things they can’t with their men.

JoReviews Fan: My husband and I both got married at the age of 21. He was in the Navy and was stationed on an air craft carrier in Norfolk, Virginia, (my home town). We’ve been married for for 2 1/2 years. During our marriage, he deployed twice, to the Persian Gulf for 7 month each. During that time I was lucky to have my family there for me and friends to keep my head up. I would think of him every second of every day. I worked a full time job, living with my parents, so that we could save money to buy a house and move to his home town of Kansas City at the end of his term in the navy. I come from a big family, and it was hard to know that i was leaving them to start a life with my husband. The only family he has here is His mom and his 6 year old daughter. We moved to Kansas City last July and we bought a house as planned. I was lucky to find a Graphic Design job with the same company I worked in Virginia. Working there I became really good friends with my co-worker. We’re about the same age and we get along great. I tell her all of my problems. The move was really tough on me. I cried 2-3 times a week being home sick, missing my family back home, especially my grandpa who is very sick. I just recently found out that my oldest sister is pregnant with her first child. My husband is now going to school to become a fire fighter, and he’s changed a lot since we moved here. I think its postpartum depression with him just getting out of the navy. He really hasn’t been there for me emotionally. so i cant tell him how i feel. My co-worker is a great listener. I was new to the area, and i really needed time to not think about how crazy my life has been. She’s introduced me to her group of friends. They are all sweethearts. We’ve gone out to eat, karaoke bars and power and light district. Getting married at 21, i never really got the chance to go out and have a good time till now. I’m 23, and I work full time, while my husband is in school, we have so many bills its ridiculous. I feel like we’re and old married couple, all we do is stay at home and scream at each other about money. There are times when i just need to get away from all of my problems, go out and dance, have a couple of drinks and laugh with my new friends. Some time to refresh my mind, vent to my girls, and for them to tell me that “it’s going to be alright”. I recently just saw the preview for DEAR JOHN, and it hit home for me. i teared up because i lived through not having my husband for 14 months of being deployed. receiving a letter meant the world to both of us. I’m curious to see how similar our lived have been compared to this movie.

Larry: My girl needs a night out cause she lives with me!

Laurie: Me and my girls need a girls night out so we can just get away and have some good ol girl time without our guys. We need it every once in awhile don’t we?

Rebecca: mommy time is needed!

Nicole: I just graduated from nursing school and all I do, everyday, is take care of my 2 year old son and study for NCLEX. I need it!

Elishia: My best friend went back to school this semester, and by doing so she has to cut back her hours at work and still support her two rapidly growing boys, so because of this she rarely gets to go out and have a good time! So this would be a perfect girls night adventure! loads of fun and easy on a students wallet!!!

Pam: my friend and i derserve a girls night out because between the 2 of us we have 7 kids and the oldest one of the bunch is 5. i have a 5 yr old, 3 yr old and 1 yr old twins. she has a 4 yr old, 2 yr old and 8 month old. her husband has been laid off for 9 months. she has been at home with him and 3 kids. you can only imagine. we would LOVE a night out and if we could we would like to bring another friend with us who has 3 kids and needs a break also. thanks!!!

Abbey: all of my friends are mommies and we RARELY get to hang out all together…and I NEVER go out (with three of them, it’s tough to)!!!!

Aisha: My girls and I need a night out because we are hard working college students stuck in the middle of nowhere at a women’s college. We need a night in the city. That would be amazing.

Drag Me to Hell, Land of the Lost, and The Proposal out today!

Two good ones and one bad…You Pick!

The Proposal: When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

Land of the Lost: Space-time vortexes suck. Has been scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, is sucked into one and spat back through time. Way back. Now, Marshall has no weapons, few skills and questionable smarts to survive in an alternate universe full of marauding dinosaurs and fantastic creatures from beyond our world. Sucked alongside him for the adventure are crack-smart research assistant Holly and a redneck survivalist named Will. Chased by T. rex and stalked by painfully slow reptiles known as Sleestaks, Marshall, Will and Holly must rely on their only ally — a primate called Chaka to navigate out of the hybrid dimension. Escape from this routine expedition gone awry and they’re heroes. Get stuck, and they’ll be permanent refugees in the Land of the Lost.

Drag Me to Hell: Christine Brown is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton. Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan.

Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks, and get a leg-up on a promotion? Christine fatefully chooses the latter, shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home.

In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas to save her soul from eternal damnation.

To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: How far will she go to break free of the curse?

Lymelife, Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past, Battle for Terra and Observe & Report

A romantic comedy and a dark comedy paired with sci fi and drama. This week’s films coming out on DVD are:

Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past: Celebrity photographer Connor Mead loves freedom, fun and women… in that order. A committed bachelor who thinks nothing of breaking up with multiple women on a conference call, Connor’s mockery of romance proves a real buzz-kill for his kid brother, Paul, and a houseful of well wishers on the eve of Paul’s wedding.

Just when it looks like Connor may single-handedly ruin the wedding, he is visited by the ghosts of his former jilted girlfriends, who take him on a revealing and hilarious odyssey through his failed relationships–past, present and future. Together they attempt to find out what turned Connor into such an insensitive jerk and whether there is still hope for him to find true love…or if he really is the lost cause everyone thinks he is.

Observe & Report: At the Forest Ridge Mall, head of security Ronnie Barnhardt (SETH ROGEN) patrols his jurisdiction with an iron fist. The master of his domain, he combats skateboarders, shoplifters and the occasional unruly customer while dreaming of the day when he can swap his flashlight for a badge and a gun.

Ronnie’s delusions of grandeur are put to the test when the mall is struck by a flasher. Driven by his personal duty to protect and serve the mall and its patrons, Ronnie seizes the opportunity to showcase his under-appreciated law enforcement talents on a grand scale, hoping his solution of this crime will earn him a coveted spot at the police academy and the heart of his elusive dream girl Brandi (ANNA FARIS), the hot make-up counter clerk who won’t give him the time of day.

But his single-minded pursuit of glory launches a turf war with the equally competitive Detective Harrison (RAY LIOTTA) of the Conway Police, and Ronnie is confronted with the challenge of not only catching the flasher, but getting him before the real cops.

Battle for Terra: When the peaceful inhabitants of the beautiful planet Terra come under attack from the last surviving members of humanity adrift in an aging spaceship, the stage is set for an all-out war between the two species for control of the planet. But will an unlikely friendship between a rebellious young Terrian (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood) and an injured human pilot (Luke Wilson) somehow convince their leaders that war is not the answer?

Lymelife: 15-year old Scott Bartlett’s family life is turned upside-down after an outbreak of Lyme disease hits the community spreading illness and paranoia. Scott’s parents — a workaholic father, Mickey, and an overprotective mother, Brenda — are on the verge of a divorce as his older brother Jim is about to ship off for war. Complicating matters, Scott has fallen in love with his next door neighbor, Adrianna Bragg. Adrianna seems to be the only person in the world who understands Scott demonstrated by her equally troubled, less affluent family including an uptight mother, Melissa, carrying on a not-so-clandestine love affair, and a father, Charlie, slowly slipping away from the effects of Lyme disease.

Let us focus on relationships, dating, love, sex, and lust. Who has the answers on what really makes the male and female tick? Let the battle begin as the heat is turned up in Columbia Pictures’ comedy “The Ugly Truth”. Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) is a romantically challenged morning show producer who is searching for Mr. Perfect. Abby’s idea of a perfect man being someone who can pass her checklist and deal with her controlling ways. She’s in for a rude awakening when her bosses team her with Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), a hardcore TV personality who promises to spill the ugly truth on what men want and what women don’t want to hear.

The duo is immediately at odds until it comes to Abby’s new love interest. Dreamy for her neighbor, Colin (Eric Winter), Abby tries to control the situation pushing the dreamy doctor away. When Chadway gives Abby pointers on how to peak her prey’s interest, Abby follows suit quickly learning these ploys of disinterest and sex appeal work. After landing a date with Colin she begins to see Chadway in a new light. Opening her up to the idea that the ugly truth may not be so bad. But is the truth worth changing who you are for someone else?

“The Ugly Truth” is a raunchy romantic comedy. This film can be enjoyed by all the men out there, a majority of them relating to “The Ugly Truth”. I found myself laughing throughout the film, from Chadway’s comical lessons to co-anchor spouses to Abby’s vibrating undergarments. Gerard Butler offered a new comedic side that paralleled well to Katherine Heigl’s uptight performance. With so many vulgar expressions the film should be targeted to the adults out there who can relate and enjoy this devilish treat. Daring and dirty…making it so delicious.

The long journey Verona and Burt take is thought provoking, leaving viewers pleased that they tagged along for the ride.

It’s a long road home, or at least finding the perfect spot to call home. “Away We Go” proves just that point, as soon to be parents Verona De Tessant (Maya Rudolph) and Burt Farlander (John Krasinski) are on the trip of a lifetime to find the perfect place to start their family. Both are in their thirties, struggling with income and in need of some guidance. When Burt is informed by his jubilant parents that they are moving out of the county for a couple years, before the baby is even born, the couple decide to pick up and discover a new home and family on their own.

First stop on the journey is Phoenix. Albeit warmer climate than the chilly Colorado they have just fled, they find the reunion with Verona’s former boss/“friend”, Lily (Allison Janney) is enough to have them running out of town. After a quick visit with Verona’s sister they head to Madison, where Burt reunites with his “cousin” LN (Maggie Gyllenhaal) which turns out to be an eye opening experience on parenting. LN has a new age style of parenting, one that promotes a family bed, even finding strollers obtrusive. After a heated ending to the reunion Burt and Verona are affirmative that Madison can keep the lunatics and they will keep on searching.

On their last stop they visit college friends, rooming with them and their adoptive children. Out of all the destinations they find this to be the favorite. Even with the comforts of Canada, they still have not found the true comforts of home. Promising to love each other and be the bets parents they can be, Verona and Burt exchange vows. As the destinations come to an end they finally realize their past has leaded them to where their true home lies.

Sam Mendes brings us a light hearted comedy that will appeal to all audiences. Offering us likeable characters and assuring they were cast properly. An insightful film that is honest about the concerns many first time parents have. The pace at time seemed to stumble, but not long after the audience was drawn back in. Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski proved their ability to take on a lead role and had incredible chemistry. “Away We Go” is a poignant tale of true love. The long journey Verona and Burt take is thought provoking, leaving viewers pleased that they tagged along for the ride.
