FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS

Dylan (Justin Timberlake) and Jamie (Mila Kunis) think it’s going to be easy to add the simple act of sex to their friendship, despite what Hollywood romantic comedies would have them believe. They soon discover however that getting physical really does always lead to complications.

“Something Borrowed” is another romantic comedy focusing on the one that got away. Ginnifer Goodwin is Rachel, a successful lawyer who has just turned thirty. While helping plan her best friend Darcy’s (Kate Hudson) wedding, she feels like her life is not moving forward. Being single and turning thirty brings her down in the dumps. She turns to her old friend Dex (Colin Egglesfield) for a supportive ear over a few drinks. One drink too many and Dex and Rachel wake up next to each other.

This is shocking to both friends as Dex is the man who is set to marry Rachel’s best friend Darcy. The one night stand leads to many old feelings resurfacing. It turns out Rachel has always had feelings for Dex, but stepped aside when her friend Darcy threw herself at him. Rachel being the meek of the two in the friendship always allowed Darcy to shine and steal the spotlight. As the wedding begins to come closer Rachel and Dex open up about their true feelings and find that maybe Dex marrying Darcy is a mistake. However, Dex seems divided and unsure of what to do.

Rachel feeling heartbroken turns to close friend Ethan (John Krasinski) and admits to her indiscretion with the groom to be. Ethan gets Rachel to open her eyes and knows where her heart truly belongs and makes her realize that she has always put Darcy first, even all those years back when she allowed her to walk all over her and ‘borrow’ Dex. Deciding to put herself first and follow her heart this time she will have to hurt the person she loves the most to move forward and be happy.

“Something Borrowed” is a gloomy love tale about the haves and have not’s. It is a stereotypical movie about the blondes vs. the brunettes. Rachel (brunette) is the lawyer with all the brains who stays at home without a love life and Darcy (blonde) is the wild fun girl who is not afraid to speak her mind and go after what she wants. It was insulting to see how they portrayed both girls and made them equally out to be very naïve and desperate.

John Krasinski who is a comical gift was unused in this minor humorous film. He was there one minute and gone the next. “Something Borrowed” would not be a great or even a good date movie. Who wants to see how a girl walks away from a guy so easily to only have him get engaged to her best friend, and then a one night stand leads him into wanting to call of the wedding. It has been done in many different ways, but this one was a little ridiculous and depressing. There is not a whole lot to love about this supposed romantic comedy and thus it is not worth the ticket price, wait for the DVD!

Not only the funniest Sandler film since “50 First Dates”, but funniest of 2011!

Adam Sandler is back and this time I am not complaining. He returns in “Just Go With It” as Danny a plastic surgeon that had his heart broken decades ago. Not looking for a relationship he uses a wedding ring to portray the used husband who is in a distressed relationship to pick up unknowing chicks. His scheme is working pretty well until he has chemistry with one of the girls. When Palmer (Brooklyn Decker) finds the ring she is disgusted that she hooked up with a married man so the quick thinking Danny tells Palmer he is in the midst of a divorce.

Not one to believe his lies easily Palmer asks to meet his soon to be ex. Nowhere else to turn Danny begs his assistant Katherine (Jennifer Aniston) to be his wife, after much haste she jumps on board. Everything goes smoothly until Katherine’s children call while meeting Palmer, who assumes they are Danny’s children and insists on meeting them. Lie after lie mounts and eventually the entire family travels to Hawaii where the bonding begins. Danny finds himself drawn to another and things become very clear on the beautiful island.

“Just Go With It” was a fun movie. I enjoyed every minute of it and found myself laughing throughout. Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston had superb chemistry and the children stars were amazing. Bailee Madison (Maggie) and Griffin Gluck (Michael) are young starlets in the making. With a wide variety of big players in this film it can’t be missed. Not only the funniest Sandler film since “50 First Dates”, but funniest of 2011!

“Morning Glory” was a terrific surprise!

Finally there is a film that offers some adult humor that is fresh and amusing. “Morning Glory” stars Rachel McAdams as Becky an up and coming television producer who is given the opportunity to take over as producer of a struggling morning talk show in the hopes of raising the ratings and avoiding the axe. It is a task that is not a light one for Becky who jumps on board and runs full steam ahead. Even firing the co-host on her first day. With a small budget and a wild passion for her work she seeks out legendary reporter Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) to take over as co-host.

With a little coaxing, more like bribing due to his contract Becky gets Mike to join the morning show. Mike as a former serious news reporter finds everything about the morning talk show appalling. Even words like ‘fluffy’ he refuses to use. He shows no interest in his co-host and refuses to offer any banter and basically winds up sinking the show. Even with Becky’s pleading to change his ways and learn to work with his co-host Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), Mike becomes more obstinate and arrogant.

But then a hint of magic happens. Becky lets the two anchors air their dirty laundry to their viewing audience. Not only does it help Mike to like his job a little more, but also the audience seems to love it as the ratings rise week by week. Becky goes as far as to get her weather anchor to partake in many on-air wild rides. Including roller coasters, ski diving and getting tattooed. Live on the air for all to enjoy.

“Morning Glory” was a terrific surprise! Rachel McAdams proved how passionate her character was about her career and had tremendous chemistry with co-star Harrison Ford. Another pleasant surprise was how much I enjoyed Ford’s performance. Finally a lighthearted film that showcased him in a brilliant way. With an abundance of creative talent and laugh out loud moments “Morning Glory” is the perfect film for Fall. Forget the Today Show and GMA; if Morning Glory were on-air it would be my AM show to watch!

REVIEW

Valentine’s Days is a holiday that most people either love or hate. In my opinion it is about purchasing the love of that special someone. Whether its dinner, flowers, diamonds or chocolates it all comes done to the pressures and expectations to prove that love. The film “Valentine’s Day” proves this over and over again in its story of love gone wrong. Following the lives of many lovers showing how desperate they are to have that special someone on this special day. The first couple we see is Morley (Jessica Alba) and Reed (Ashton Kutcher). Reed is head over heels for his live in girlfriend Morley and proposes to her. Overly excited about her saying yes he tells everyone, only to find out later that Morley is unsure about this big commitment.

Throughout the day Reed runs his local floral shop in Los Angeles and is extremely busy. Julia (Jennifer Garner) his best friend stops by to share her news about how she is falling for the guy of her dreams. Dr. Harrison Copeland (Patrick Dempsey) is that perfect guy that Julia can’t stop thinking about. Disappointed that he will be working on Valentine’s Day she decides to surprise him at the hospital. Julia only finds heartbreak when she learns that McDreamy is not working, but instead has been lying.

Just as it looks like everyone’s Valentine’s Day is becoming a tragic chain of events they bring in the teenagers who are super excited to carry bears around at school all day and share unlimited make out sessions. Felicia (Taylor Swift) is one of these overzealous teens who is in puppy love with her boyfriend Willy (Taylor Lautner). Their high school friends Grace (Emma Roberts) and Alex (Carter Jenkins) are planning to make love for the first time to celebrate the occasion.

As some are living the day up and loving everything about it there are a few who hate it. Kara (Jessica Biel) celebrates the day with her fellow singles by bashing it with a loveless dinner. Kara soon discovers she has chemistry with a fellow loveless player Kelvin (Jamie Foxx). While they are discovering there interest in each other so are Jason (Topher Grace) and Liz (Anne Hathaway) co-workers who after a few dates are trying to figure out how to celebrate the day. Meanwhile Capt. Kate Hazeltine (Julia Roberts) is flying home to be with her loved one for only twenty four hours. Something that Holden (Bradley Cooper) is impressed by. Other lovers we see are Edgar (Hector Elizondo) and Estelle (Shirley MacLaine) who have been in love for many years only to discover a dark secret in their pass.

All these major stars together could wind up being a complete bust, but it actually works. “Valentine’s Day” displays all the emotions Valentine’s Day brings up including love, regrets, lust, heartbreak and deceit. With so many wonderful performers the ones who stood out would be Jessica Biel who was very relatable to a girlfriend most woman tend to have. George Lopez was underused in this film and his comedy could have added a much needed undertone. Eric Dane offered a shocking jaw dropping performance that everyone will be talking about. And finally let’s talk about the over-rated Taylor Swift. I’m sorry Taylor, but your acting was awful. It was overplayed and so annoying that I was waiting for your heart to break. Stick to your singing as a career, acting is not your forte. “Valentine’s Day” will be the perfect film to catch with your loved one. A little on the long side, but it takes time to tell everyone’s love story after all. Attention guys: skip the roses and truffles and take her to something she will really love.

Not the best romantic comedy, but as an expectant mother it's humor engaged me!

As they say every woman has that internal clock that is ticking. For those who have not found Mr. Right the solution is to create Mr. Right, the one that comes in a tube. In “The Back Up Plan” Jennifer Lopez is Zoe, an attractive New Yorker who has found a successful career but is missing that piece to her future. After numerous failed relationships she has given up that the ‘one’ will ever appear. As life is passing her by she finds herself longing for a child. Taking the steps necessary Zoe decides insemination from a sperm donor to be her best bet.

As fate would have it immediately following her implantation she meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin) and the pair have an immediate disdain for each other. As Zoe has mothering thoughts on her mind, a man is the last thing she is thinking of. That is until she gets her second glimpse of Stan at the local farmer’s market. Finding him attractive and charming she begins to gravitate towards the what if conclusion only to have it diminished by the “muffin girl” who ask Stan if she will be seeing him later that night.

Deciding now is not the time to dabble in her love life Zoe moves on, only to find herself being pursued by Stan. He shows up at her work and asks for a date. The first date turns into two and then an invitation out to his farm. After the second date, still not believing she is pregnant Zoe is shocked and horrified to see that big red plus sign. Hormones in overdrive Zoe finds herself unable to control herself around Stan and around the food that she constantly devours.

Finally Zoe decides it is time to fess up to Stan. Admitting she is pregnant and explaining the why and how, which Stan does not find humor in and is immediately appalled. Admitting he is not sure he wants kids, but also knowing that he has serious feelings for Zoe he decides to jump into a relationship with her and accept the baby as his own. In what World does that happen?

“The Back Up Plan” is a great comeback for Jennifer Lopez. It is an adorable romantic comedy and I can admit as a six month pregnant woman she played true to the feelings most pregnant woman are experiencing. I enjoyed Alex O’Loughlin’s performance as the man in love and fearing everything that was coming with the woman he was committed to. Sadly once again I felt a lack of chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and her male co-star O’Loughlin, and due to that fact it made the story hard to believe. Chemistry aside this is a MAJOR chick flick. Knocked Up was a film all men could enjoy, but if I dragged my husband to this film I would never hear the end of it. Ladies leave your men at home and check out this film with your girlfriends, as it is a cute film that most will enjoy.

We discover a lot about love and that Taylor Swift can't act! Oh...and Eric Dane shocks the hell out of us.
