The Last Station, Remember Me, Green Zone and She's Out of My League

Green Zone: Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, United 93) re-team for their latest electrifying thriller in Green Zone, a film set in the chaotic early days of the Iraqi War when no one could be trusted and every decision could detonate unforeseen consequences.

During the U.S.-led occupation of Baghdad in 2003, Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) and his team of Army inspectors were dispatched to find weapons of mass destruction believed to be stockpiled in the Iraqi desert. Rocketing from one booby-trapped and treacherous site to the next, the men search for deadly chemical agents but stumble instead upon an elaborate cover-up that inverts the purpose of their mission.

Spun by operatives with intersecting agendas, Miller must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil for answers that will either clear a rogue regime or escalate a war in an unstable region. And at this blistering time and in this combustible place, he will find the most elusive weapon of all is the truth.

She’s Out of My League: In this outrageous comedy, Kirk (Jay Baruchel, “Knocked Up”, “Tropic Thunder”), an average guy, can’t believe his luck when the successful and gorgeous babe Molly (Alice Eve, “Sex and the City 2”) falls for him. His smart-ass friends, his crazy family, and even his obnoxious ex-girlfriend are just as shocked as he is.

Remember Me: In the summer of 2001, New York college student Tyler (Robert Pattinson) is still feeling lost from the tragedy that has strained his relationship with his father when he meets Ally (Emilie de Ravin), a girl who understands his pain. The last thing Tyler’s looking for is love, but through their passionate relationship, he finds new possibilities for happiness. It’s an unforgettable story about the power of the heart, the strength of family, and the importance of treasuring every day of one’s life.

The Last Station: Set in the last tumultuous years of famed Russian author Leo Tolstoy’s life, centers on the battle for his soul waged by his wife Sofya Andreyevna and his leading disciple Vladimir Cherkov. Torn between his professed doctrine of poverty and chastity and the reality of his enormous wealth, his thirteen children and a life of hedonism, Tolstoy makes a dramatic flight from his home. Too ill to continue beyond the tiny rail station at Astapovo, he believes that he is dying alone, while over one hundred newspapermen camp outside awaiting hourly reports on his condition.

Valentine’s Day: An all-star ensemble cast comes together in “Valentine’s Day,” which follows the intertwining storylines of a diverse group of Los Angelenos as they navigate their way through romance and heartbreak over the course of one Valentine’s Day. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid.
The Spy Next Door: THE SPY NEXT DOOR stars Jackie Chan as Bob Ho, an undercover CIA superspy who decides to give up his career in espionage to settle down with his next-door neighbor and girlfriend, Gillian (Amber Valletta).
When Gillian suddenly has to leave town, Bob volunteers to babysit the children so he can earn their approval. But when one of the kids mistakenly downloads a top-secret formula from his computer, Bob’s archenemy, a Russian terrorist, moves in for the attack, forcing Bob to juggle the roles of spy and prospective stepfather in the most challenging mission of his career!

Extraordinary Measures: Inspired by a true story, this drama is centered on the efforts of John and Aileen Crowley to find a researcher who might have a cure for their two children’s rare genetic disorder. From the Academy Award® winning screenwriter of Chocolat and Producers of Erin Brockovich! Based on the Wall Street Journal article and subsequent book, “The Cure”, by Pulitzer Prize – winning writer Geeta Anand.

2012, Where the Wild Things Are, Ponyo and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee out on DVD.

The little ones will have movies to be excited over this week, along with a story about the end of the World for the adult crowd. Hitting shelves this week on DVD:

2012: Dr. Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is part of a worldwide geophysical team investigating the effect radiation from unprecedented solar storms is having on the earth. Helmsley learns that the earth’s core is heating up. He warns U.S. President Thomas Wilson (Danny Glover) that the crust of the earth is becoming unstable and unless they steps to prepare for saving a fraction of the world’s population, the entire race is doomed. Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) stumbles on the same information. While the world’s leaders race to build “arks” to escape the impending cataclysm, Curtis struggles to find a way to save his family. Meanwhile, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes of unprecedented strength wreak havoc around the world.

Where the Wild Things Are: Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are. He lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought.

Ponyo: Welcome to a world where anything is possible! Academy Award–winning director Hayao Miyazaki (2002, Best Animated Feature, Spirited Away) and legendary filmmaker John Lasseter together with Disney bring to life a heartwarming and imaginative telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid. Plus, this 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray includes never-before-seen bonus features that take you on a journey deep into the film’s enchanted world. A young boy named Sosuke rescues a goldfish named Ponyo, and they embark on a fantastic journey of friendship and discovery before Ponyo’s father, a powerful sorcerer, forces her to return to her home in the sea. In defiance, Ponyo releases the magical water of life, and chaos reigns until balance is restored to the world they cherish. Ponyo will delight your family with its magnificent animation and timeless story.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee: From all outward appearances, Pippa Lee (Wright Penn) leads a charmed existence. She is the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher (Arkin) thirty years her senior, the proud mother of two grown children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. But as Pippa dutifully follows her husband to a new life in a staid Connecticut retirement community, her idyllic world and the persona she has built over the course of her marriage will be put to the ultimate test.

In truth, looks are deceiving, and this picture-perfect woman has seen more than her fair share of turmoil in her youth. Embarking on a bittersweet journey or self-discovery, accompanied by a new, strange and soulful acquaintance (Reeves), Pippa must now confront both her volatile past and the hidden resentment of her seemingly perfect life in order to find her true sense of self.

Everybody's Fine, The Box, Sorority Row, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant, and The Informant!

A couple horror/thriller films and a dude who is an expert at lying. Coming to DVD this week:

The Informant: What was Mark Whitacre thinking? A rising star at agri-industry giant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), Whitacre suddenly turns whistleblower. Even as he exposes his company’s multi-national price-fixing conspiracy to the FBI, Whitacre envisions himself being hailed as a hero of the common man and handed a promotion.

But before all that can happen, the FBI needs evidence, so Whitacre eagerly agrees to wear a wire and carry a hidden tape recorder in his briefcase, imagining himself as a kind of de facto secret agent. Unfortunately for the FBI, their lead witness hasn’t been quite so forthcoming about helping himself to the corporate coffers.

Whitacre’s ever-changing account frustrates the agents and threatens the case against ADM as it becomes almost impossible to decipher what is real and what is the product of Whitacre’s rambling imagination. Based on the true story of the highest-ranking corporate whistleblower in U.S. history.

The Box: Norma and Arthur Lewis are a suburban couple with a young child who receive an anonymous gift bearing fatal and irrevocable consequences. A simple wooden box, it promises to deliver its owner $1 million with the press of a button. However, pressing this button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world…someone they don’t know. With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the crosshairs of a startling moral dilemma and face the true nature of their humanity.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant: A boy unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

14-year-old Darren was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That’s the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

Sorority Row: When five sorority girls inadvertently cause the murder of one of their sisters in a prank gone wrong, they agree to keep the matter to themselves and never speak of it again, so they can get on with their lives. This proves easier said than done, when after graduation a mysterious killer goes after the five of them and anyone who knows their secret.

Everybody’s Fine: A widower embarks on an impromptu road trip to reconnect with each of his grown children only to discover that their lives are far from picture perfect.

INVICTUS

From director Clint Eastwood, “Invictus” tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Spyglass Entertainment, a Revelations Entertainment/Mace Neufeld production, a Malpaso production, “Invictus,” starring Oscar® winners Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby,” “The Dark Knight”) and Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” the “Bourne” franchise).

Jenna: Million Dollar Baby

Brett: Every Which Way But Loose

Dana: Bridges of Madison County was my favorite movie starring Clint Eastwood. I’ve had a crush on him since he was a cowboy on the TV series Rawhide. That dates me certainly, but I’ve seen all his movies. It was nice to see him play a role where he wasn’t shooting a gun! : )

Kelsey: Mystic River!

Phil: Unforgiven as the rugged man who had to do his duty.

Eduardo: I think that some of his best work so far is the grandturino.

Bruce: I would have to say by far, Letters from Iwo Jima really stood out from amongst his extensive body of work. I know it was a two sided story with the other side being told through the movie Flag of Our fathers, but this one shined bright as it gave an often stark look at war and how it was seen through the eyes of the Japanese.

Jill: Honkey Tonk Man… he is AMAZING at the end of that film… a kind, messed up man, who you wanted to hate, but grew to love… and the movie was with his son. LOVED his work in that movie… and he sang! =)

Amber: Rawhide. I remember watching that when I was a little girl. I loved it!!

Raysa: Grand Tarino

Diana: Gran Torino

Luke: Dirty Harry! Duh!!!

Diana: Grand Torino- He played such a diverse character- not used to seeing him play that kind of bad boy, used to seeing him as a cowboy or some other rough neck, outstanding work.

Nik: Dirty Harry

Shelley: Unforgiven

Christy: Million Dollar Baby

Martha: Dirty Harry

Charles: Unforgiven

Bridget: Dirty Dozen

Shaunta: Grand Terino

Amar: Million Dollar Baby

Levera: Dirty Harry because he kick butt

Rachel: Gran Torino. He was so haunting and amazing!!!

Amanada: His best work was in Gran Torino. That movie was amazing and he was the reason why it was.

Lauren: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

John: I have to divide my answer into categories. I think Mr. Eastwood’s (total respect for the man) best acting was his last role in Gran Torino. It was a believable character that required different emotions, come on he actually sheds a tear in that film..
His best directing job was Letters from Iwo Jima, that was a brilliant idea and a fantastic film.
The first R rated film that I saw was Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. I went with my Dad who was embarrassed about the sex scenes in that movie. I was 14 and back then did not go to the movies very often.

Dave: Grand Trinio

Robert: Dirty Harry, without a doubt.

Diane: Dirty Harry

Harriet: Gran Torino because his character was tough, yet he had a super nice side that helped to very great kids make it through bad neighborhood.

Khadijah: I’m not that old and really haven’t got into all that yet but I did like Gran Torino , Million Dollar Baby, and my moms turned me on to Dirty Harry, Letters to Iwo Jimo. Those are a few GREAT works, Jo…

Jonna: Million Dollar Baby – Just a great movie all the way around.

Pamela: Every movie he has done

Michelle: Grand Torino

John: In the Line of Fire. He used all of his best acting traits to make the character come to life.

Tyler: dirty hairy

RJ: bloodwork…although he did extremely well in gran torino.

Nathan: dirty hary

Amy: Dirty Harry. All of them. Loved him then and love him now. Enjoy sharing with my sons!

Peggy: Gran Torino

Virginia: The Bridges of Madison County – a real tear jerker. even reading the book made me cry!

Virginia: Gran Torino – best old fart ever!

Ginny: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly – best spaghetti western ever!

Virginia: Dirty Harry – cool cop!

Ginny: “Million Dollar Baby” – great acting & directing. Really brought out the best in Hillary Swank.

Jon: Unforgiven. No question.

Paul: Gran Torino (2008)

Isaac: Gran Torino. So good at being a racist old man. We all know a number of people (mostly over a certain age) that have similar opinions. And they usually aren’t bad people, they just won’t win any PC awards.

Larry: DIRTY HARRY/UNFORGIVEN

Laurie: A PERFECT WORLD/MILLION DOLLAR BABY

Let’s start by stating Matt Damon is hysterical in “The Informant!” Mark Whitacre (Damon) has worked for lysine developing company ADM for many years and has even found his way into upper management. Nothing has prepared him for the job he is about to undertake, as he becomes a spy for the FBI. Against his will he is pressured into working as an informant against the illegal price-fixing activities of his company. Not exactly the smoothest operator Mark has many troubles from narrating taped conversations to being the office gossiper.

It seems that Mark can’t keep his trap shut. As the investigation continues it is learned that there is much more going on at ADM then price-fixing and there is a mastermind behind it all. As the FBI gets closer to making its case and shutting down ADM, the oblivious employee is awaiting his promotion to VP as all the other employees will be indicted.

We must again reiterate how comical Matt Damon is in this film. With very little effort put forth he makes this film work. Albeit it has a dull tone and can drag, but once again Damon pulls you back in. Steven Soderbergh’s comical take on corporate embezzling in modern-day America is a riot. Based on true events and the 2000 non fiction book about Mark Whitacre, “The Informant”, by journalist Kurt Eichenwald. “The Informant!” is an enjoyable film, with something different to offer movie goers.

What was Mark Whitacre thinking? Based on the true story of the highest-ranking corporate whistleblower in U.S. history.

Romantic Comedy

From Ricky Gervais, the award-winning creator and star of the original BBC series “The Office” and HBO’s “Extras,” comes the new romantic comedy “The Invention of Lying,” which takes place in an alternate reality where lying—even the concept of a lie—does not exist. Everyone—from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street—speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences. But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

This film has been rated PG-13 for language including some sexual material and a drug reference.

Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought.

Congrats to Susan from KCMO - her favorite summer film was Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory!

Summer is one of the hottest times of the year at the box office, and I have compiled a Top Ten list of my favorite summer hits from the last decade. With so many great films it was hard decision, but here are my picks:

#10 IRON MAN (2008)

The comeback of Robert Downey Jr in this exciting comedy. With amazing action and special effects that have you salivating for more.

#9 LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE (2006)

A quirky comedy starring Abigail Breslin that has you loving its dysfunctional family. Nothing is more adorable than the final act to “Superfreak”.

#8 THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (2008)

The final in the series, and in my opinion the best. Matt Damon proved he could be Bourne any day of the week and left us craving for me action packed films.

#7 AMERICAN PIE (1999)

The one & only original teen film that we all know and love. Pies, flutes, band camp, and MILF who could ask for more?

#6 SPIDERMAN (2002)

The Marvel comic hero brought to the big screen. Causing such a stir that it has been done countless times now. But the original stands out and proved to be a success.

#5 THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

The highly anticipated film that earned the Joker, Heath Ledger, every award under the sun, as rightfully so. With so much hype surrounding this film people could not turn away and found them in for a treat.

#4 THE SIXTH SENSE (1999)

Who could forgot, “I see dead people”. Nothing compares to the story of a small child seeing ghosts and trying to help them to find their final resting place. It was the kick off to M Night Shammalyans freaky films, unfortunately nothing comes close to this hit.

#3 THE NOTEBOOK (2004)

Quite possibly the most romantic film I have ever seen. A tale of ever lasting love that transcends age and time. I found myself falling in love all over again.

#2 PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003)

Who would have expected Disney to come out with a film starring Johnny Depp that would soar? This film has everything you could ask for. Comedy, suspense, action, and adorable pirates. Hoping they will jump on board for another, although nothing beats the original.

#1…KNOCKED UP (2007)

The charming comedy of a one night stand turned into true love. Yeah it is far fetched, but the cast makes up for that. This film put Seth Rogen on the map and gave us a good look into how appealing the Apatow crew could be.

The Dark Knight: My favorite summer movie has to be The Dark Knight. It was a movie I knew I wanted to see, so I did not watch any trailers nor did I read any reviews in advance … I wanted to movie to stand or fall on its own merits. Needless to say I was blown away with with movie, cinematography, and Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker. I hope the next installment in the Batman line lives up to this one because it will certainly be hard to follow! (By JoReviews Fan)

The Bucket List: I am absoulutely a softy when it comes to sentimental and touchy movies.
This serio comic movie is truely a top movie for me where 2 grown men opposite in there lives meet when put in the cancer ward to become close best friends and make a list of all the things they want to accomplish in there time to live.
The touching part is to me how they both follow through and help each other out in finding the rest of the things in there lives to fullfill and make right before they die. they stick with each other to the end that is how life should be every precious moment spent doing all the things you enjoy in life and being around all the people you love and care about. Always enjoy life to the fullest live, love, laugh!!!! that is why i love the movie it has so much meaning to it and learning and understanding. (By Edwina)

The lines were around the block, and that is where they first coined the term blockbuster. I was a kid , and I had never heard an audience scream that loud or laugh that long. We went to see it three times three days in a row just to see the audience react! It was almost more fun knowing what was coming. (By Theresa)

Not to mention its the first time seeing Eva Mendez!! The music was slammin it was star studded! (By Richard)

Little Miss Sunshine: (By Karen)

And truthfully, 2 or three times, when the theme music played I or we (my friend Ron, hurried to catch the next showing at the Old Glenwood Main screen. In the end I saw it 22 times over the next 13 months. (By John)

The Bucket List & The Soloist: Relationships among the human race have begun ‘grooming’ the world. It is OK to be happy, help someone who may be sad or just give and share. The seasons of our lives are phenomenal! Many changes encompass our time together. And society has become more accepting and aware of life as it should be and/or as it used to be. Time is evolving…again! With this I believe The Soloist and The Bucket List gives compassion, love, laughter and ‘food for thought’ that we can all take lessons from! (By Veevee)

The Bourne Ultimatum: I don’t know what it is about the Bourne series of movies, but I just can’t get enough. The latest installment was the best of the series by far (I think I read that they may be making a 4th). I am not normally a fan of these fast paced action films, but I loves me some Jason Bourne! The action in this one is not too far fetched for me. What I mean by that is I can see were Matt Damon probably did alot of his own stunts and it didn’t seem computer enhanced. I hate it when things don’t look real or you find yourself saying “yeah right” when stuff is happening on screen. I can watch all three of these movies again and again and not get bored. In fact we made sure to watch the first two right before seeing the third on it’s opening weekend. (By Laurie)

The Bucket List: it is a good clean movie. (By Sharon)

Batman: The original Batman film owned the summer of 1989. It was the first comic book figure, since Superman, to make it on the big screen, and paved the way for the slew of Marvel & DC figures to to launch franchises in the past two decades. If Michael Keaton’s Batman hadn’t soared at the box office, then Hollywood may have not continued to fish for material involving his masked, crime-fighting colleagues (X-Men, Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, etc.).
Notting Hill: My favorite is Notting Hill! My husband and I were in Omaha, and it was sold out. We couldn’t sit together, but I could hear him laughing thru the WHOLE movie from my seat! It was impossible to not laugh with him! Notting Hill still makes us smile. (By Anne)

Boondock Saints: There is no better movie to show your Irish pride. It may be a little inappropriate, but the movie does have love and family incorporated. And besides, getting the trash off the streets? They should do it everywhere. Can’t wait to see the sequel this year (By Amanda)

Kung Fu Panda: Yes, I mean it. Last year for my 46th birthday I wanted to really celebrate with my whole family. It’s hard to find a movie for a mom, dad, 13 yr old boy, 12 year old boy, and 5 year old girl! But, we did it! We had a great time and laughed out loud a lot. Totally fun night that I’ll remember.
Erin Brockovich: Is one of my fave movie. It was human, meaningful and funny not just another Hollywood movie. It is one of Julia Robert’s best performance. A must see!!! (By Angela)

Glory: One of Denzel Washington’s first movies with the unforgettable tear scene; or Patriot: with Mel Gibson and Heath Ledger. *sigh* I could watch either film over and over and… (By Vicky)

Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory: My most memorable summer flick was Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Our family was extremely poor so we didn’t have money for such things as movies. The local beat cops took about 30 of the neighborhood kids to the movie theatre. It was my first time inside of a movie theatre and I was so impressed. I laughed and totally enjoyed that movie. I have never forgotten that movie or those policemen for being so involved with our community. Thanks Officer Meza and crew for creating an awesome childhood memory. (By Susan)

Independence Day: Yes, I know its now an oldie, but with Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Randy Quaid, Vivica Fox, and others, its hard to pass when this comes acrss the TV tube. The movie has comedy, aliens, and good fun. The movie should only be played on a VERY large screen tv with surround sound so that when the space ship flyes over, your windows will shake and rattle. I remember the movie origianlly coming out on July 4, and every year since the movie came out, around independce day we all sit down and watch the movie again. Great memories and good family fun. Aliens taking over the earth – what better way to spend your Sunday. (By Robert)

Bride Wars: (By Lisa)

Star Wars: I lived in Honolulu in 1977. My best friend and I took the bus part of the way to the movie theatre. Then we walked on to the theatre, can’t remember why we ended up walking part way, but at the time that walk seemed like a long distance. Suddenly with the start of the movie, all the walking was worth it. Like so many others, as soon as that space ship came passing over us at the beginning of Star Wars we were hooked, first ducking down into our seats, and then up back up again with excitment. For a couple teenage kids it had it all – adventure, spirituality, & victory for the good guys, brought upon by a young kid. The movie over, we then we walked most of the way back home – reliving the movie along they way.

The Bourne Ultimatium: The action is great and it amazes me every time I watch any of the series just what a great action star Matt Damon. I would have never pictured him an action star before this series. (By Teri)

Legally Blonde:I totally wrote this film off, before seeing it, thinking it would be really stupid, a complete waste of my time and money. Boy was i wrong! It was so incredibly funny and shows the strength that women find within themselves and through meaningful friendships with other women! Total laughs and empowerment all in one chick flick! (By Ashleigh)

Once: My favorite summer film would have to be Once. This movie has amazing music in it and a heart-wrenching storyline. I could watch this everyday. (By Becca)
