Paranormal Activity, 9, A Perfect Getaway, and Jennifer's Body.

If you like horror/thrillers this is your week. Just in time for those New Year’s Eve bashes you can get one of these hot flicks on DVD:

Paranormal Activity: After a young, middle class couple moves into what seems like a typical suburban “starter” tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night… especially when they sleep… or try to.

Jennifer’s Body: When a gorgeous cheerleader is possessed by a demon and starts feeding off the boys in a small Minnesota farming town, her “plain Jane” best friend must kill her, then escape from a correctional facility to go after the Satan-worshipping rock band responsible for the horrible transformation.

9: When 9 (The Lord of the Ring’s Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction.

Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they’ll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

A Perfect Getaway: Cliff and Cydney are an adventurous young couple celebrating their honeymoon by backpacking to one of the most beautiful, and remote, beaches in Hawaii. Hiking the wild, secluded trails, they believe they’ve found paradise.

But when the pair comes across a group of frightened hikers discussing the horrifying murder of another newlywed couple on the islands, they begin to question whether they should turn back. Unsure whether to stay or flee, Cliff and Cydney join up with two other couples, and things begin to go terrifyingly wrong. Far from civilization or rescue, everyone begins to look like a threat and nobody knows whom to trust. Paradise becomes hell on earth as a brutal battle for survival begins…

No more submissions accepted at this time.

You have shared some great DOG stories, so I have to contribute too. I have 4 dogs. They are my pack and my children. All were abandoned and adopted from local shelters.

Jodee was my first dog. She is a 6 year old Alaskan Malamute mix. She loves playing fetch and her special quirk is swimming. She is great at it, but she still has not learned how to swim with her paws not being on the waters surface and splashing water everywhere.

Luckey is my protector. He is a 5 year old Chow/Retriever mix. He is a finicky dog that does not like rain, mud or snow. He tip toes around puddles. He has the instinct of a chow and is a ferocious beast at time. He was the cutest puppy ever and he is my Woman’s Best Friend.

Alvin is our strange dog. He is a 4 year old Rottweiler mix. When we adopted him we were told he would only weigh 50-60lbs and now a whopping 108lbs later you can see that was wrong. We love him regardless, he is still our playful pup.

Rocki is the baby. A one year old Saint Bernard. He was abandoned with EIGHT of his siblings off of Shawnee Mission Parkway at a closed down vet hospital. When I took him in and he was the largest of the group. He is rounding off at 90lbs now and is the tallest of our dogs. He loves to swim and runs everywhere. He is very fast and loves the dog park. He hates hardwood/linoleum floors. Aside from this strange behavior he has turned out to be a beautiful and happy dog.

That’s the story on my FOUR kids. Please continue to share yours.

Hotel for Dogs, Bride Wars and The Uninvited out Tuesday

We have a horror flick, a chick flick and a dog flick. Wow how many flicks can you get in one week? My personal favorite film was “Hotel for Dogs”, but “The Uninvited” was pretty good too! Did not have a chance to check out “Bride Wars”, but heard some unfavorable things about it, but you choose which film will be in your DVD/Blu-Ray player this weekend.

Hotel for Dogs: Hotel for Dogs, stars Emma Roberts, Jake T. Austin, Lisa Kudrow, Kevin Dillon and Don Cheadle in a smart, funny comedy adventure that shows how far love and imagination can take you. When their new guardians forbid 16-year old Andi (Roberts) and her younger brother, Bruce (Austin) to have a pet, Andi has to use her quick wit to help find a new home for their dog, Friday.

The resourceful kids stumble upon an abandoned hotel and using Bruce’s talents as a mechanical genius, transform it into a magical dog-paradise for Friday – and eventually for all Friday’s friends. When barking dogs make the neighbors suspicious, Andi and Bruce use every invention they have to avoid anyone discovering “who let the dogs in.”

Bride Wars: Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway) are best friends who since childhood have planned every detail of their respective weddings. At the top of their bridal “must have” list: a ceremony at New York’s ultimate bridal destination, the Plaza Hotel.

Now, at age 26, they’re both about to get married; they’re about to realize their dreams; and they’re about to live happily ever after.

Or maybe not…

When a clerical error causes a clash in wedding dates – they’re now to be married on the same date! – Liv, Emma and their lifelong friendship are put to the ultimate test. Liv, a successful lawyer who is used to getting what she wants, including the perfect job and the perfect man, won’t settle for anything less than the perfect wedding she has dreamed of for years. Emma, a schoolteacher who has always been good at taking care of others, but not so much in looking after herself, discovers her inner Bridezilla and comes out swinging when her own dream wedding is imperiled.

Now, the two best friends who’d do anything for each other, find themselves in a no-holds-barred, take-no-prisoners struggle that threatens to erupt into all-out war.

The Uninvited: Based on Kim Jee-Woon’s 2003 Korean horror film, “Changhwa Hongryon,” “The Uninvited” revolves around Anna (Emily Browning), who returns home after spending time in the hospital following the tragic death of her mother. Her recovery suffers a setback when she discovers her father (David Strathairn) has become engaged to her mother’s former nurse, Rachel (Elizabeth Banks). That night, Anna is visited by her mother’s ghost, who warns her of Rachel’s intentions.

Together, Anna and her sister (Arielle Kebbel) try to convince their father that his current fiancée is not who she pretends to be, and what should have been a happy family reunion becomes a lethal battle of wills between stepdaughters and stepmother.

The Spirit and The Reader out Tuesday.

Not too much to offer this week. Two films coming to DVD this week. One is with the amazing performance by Oscar winner Kate Winslet and the other is and adventure film starring some of Hollywood’s finest. Which one will you choose?

The Spirit: Adapted from the legendary comic strip, The SPirit is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister Frank Miller (creator of 300 and Sin City). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City.

His arch-enemy, the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront… all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader.

Surrounding him at every turn are Ellen Dolan (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; Plaster of Paris (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; Lorelei (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and Morgenstern (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop. Then of course, there’s Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him?

The Reader: The Reader, set in post-WWII Germany, follows teenager Michael Berg as he engages in a passionate but secretive affair with an older woman named Hanna (Winslet). Eight years after Hanna’s disappearance, Michael is stunned to discover her again as she stands on trial for Nazi war crimes. The Reader is a haunting story about truth and reconciliation and how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another.

“Hotel for Dogs” gets 4 paws way up!

“Hotel for Dogs” will be the kid’s choice for the weekend. Starring Emma Roberts and Jake Austin as Andi and Bruce, orphaned children living in a foster home until they are lucky enough to find a family willing to adopt them together. Their current foster parents are aloof and uninterested in the children. Andi and Bruce have brought their family dog with them to their foster home and have been hiding him. Friday is a member of their family and unwilling to give him up they have been caring for him anyway that two kids can. Bruce being a talented inventor has even concocted ways for Friday to know when it is dinner time and has made a motorized cart to take him up to the apartment they stay in with their foster parents, without them knowing the dog is there. After Friday is picked up by animal control the officer only releases the dog back to the kids after they bribe him with cash. Knowing the set up they have now is only temporary they begin to realize they need to find Friday a forever home.

On the way home from animal control they see a store getting broke into and when the police show up they see Andi and Bruce and immediately suspect them. The kids frightened take off and wind up in an old condemned hotel. Friday enters first and takes off. The kids search the hotel for Friday and that is when they find two other stray dogs. Both are friendly K9s, but it looks as if this is their home. The dogs take off to the upstairs and enter a room where they all sleep on the bed. The kids decide to leave Friday there for the night. When returning the next morning they begin to contemplate on what needs to be done. These dogs need to be fed and need to have exercise. Andi leaves Bruce at the hotel to wait while she goes to the local pet shop to pick up food. Not having any money Andi takes on a new task. Andi lies to Dave (Johnny Simmons), a pet store employee about how her family is fostering pets and always taking in strays. Dave then introduces Andi to several stray dogs they have been taking care of at the shop and he asks her to take them home with her, unaware of Andi’s real situation. Dave is willing to pay for dog food if she can offer a place for them to stay and Andi cannot refuse the offer; otherwise the dogs will not be eating.

Andi takes Dave to the hotel and invite the new residents in. After setting up these strays Andi and Bruce get some help from new friends, Heather (Kyla Pratt) another pet store employee and Mark (Troy Gentile) a neighbor to the hotel. These kids decide it will be their mission to save the strays and that none will be turned away. They stay one step ahead of animal control with a radio that interferes with their every call and they pick up every stray dog before Animal Control confiscates it. After cleaning the hotel up we see the true potential of this old gem. With Bruce’s ingenious ideas they create a simulating car ride with fans and a projection screen, a timed feeding mechanism for all the dogs, a poop station and even a fire hydrant shower station where the dogs can relieve them self and everything is self cleaning. Andi and Bruce are happy with their non human family, but can they continue on with this big secret?

“Hotel for Dogs” as impractical as it is there is a message from the film. Even though my opinion is a biased one as I believe in adoption and am a foster parent to animals I believe the message is hope. Hope that people will consider adoption from a local shelter, hope that people will spay and neuter their pets and finally hope that someday the 15 million animals in local shelters will find homes and we can see a decrease in that number. Children from ages 5 to 12 will love this live action film. There is plenty of comical material and animal action to keep them entertained. All performances offered by the young actors Emma Roberts, Jake Austin, Johnny Simmons, Kyla Pratt and Troy Gentile were marvelous. The adults in the film Don Cheadle, Lisa Kudrow and Kevin Dillion also offered equally amusing performances. But the dogs will still the show in this one. Not only will you get a fun family film to see this weekend you will also be helping an animal at your local shelter. Pedigree a proud sponsor for “Hotel for Dogs” is making a donation for every ticket purchased to help shelter dogs.
