“30 Minutes or Less” is a comedy about robbing a bank. Only thing is the comedy is limited. Jesse Eisenberg is Nick, a local pizza delivery boy who is kidnapped by Travis (Nick Swardson) and Dwayne (Danny McBride). Travis and Dwayne are a couple of idiots who need Nick’s help with an attempted robbery. They are in need of $100,000 for an assassin they have hired to kill Dwayne’s father. Dwayne is looking forward to inheriting his dad’s lotto winnings and home, and killing him seems to be the only way to share in his wealth.

After much planning the duo order a pizza and when Nick arrives they subdue him. When Nick awakes he finds a bomb strapped to him. Travis demonstrates the damage that can occur if he does not follow their orders. Dwayne tells Nick he needs to rob a bank and bring him a loot of at least $100K. They will be watching him and if he goes to the police they will be forced to detonate the bomb. Freaking out and needing help Nick turns to his good friend Chet (Aziz Ansari) as an accomplice in his robbery.

The two strategize about robbing the bank and things get a little crazy. As Nick races to complete his task he will do what it takes to survive his current predicament. “30 Minutes or Less” is a silly fun movie, but definitely aimed more towards the male crowd. Some of the bombing moments were disturbing and left me with a sour view of the movie. As a fan of Eisenberg I enjoyed his character and found McBride and Swardson’s comical chemistry superb as usual. The film seemed to move at a good pace, but was not something I would care to see again.

I had more fun watching “The Social Network” than I do snooping Facebook. Post a comment, tag your friends, like this post but get out and see this film!

Imagine being a billionaire six times over at the young age of twenty six. Talk about a dilemma Mark Zuckerberg is facing when former friends become enemies and greed takes over. In “The Social Network” its 2003 and Mark (Jesse Eisenberg) has just been dumped by his girlfriend. It is very apparent that Mark is not your average student, due in fact to his “code” speaking and his OCD tendencies. This is not why his girlfriend dumps him; the reason is simple as she labels him an asshole. Following his heartbreaking split he returns home and begins to rant about his ex on his blog and after a few too many drinks goes on to create a site similar to Hot or Not, but using photos of various Harvard female students. Setting the site up in an hour and hacking into various Harvard sites to gain access to the photos. The site becomes an immediate success that causes Harvard’s servers to crash after 22,000 hits in one hour.

For us bloggers 22,000 hits in an hour is unheard of. Mark’s successful hacking and programming skills catches the attention of fellow Harvard students Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra. They approach Mark with the idea of a social network for just Harvard students. They planned on using the site in an attempt to hook up with girls. Mark finds the idea interesting, but in turn comes up with something bigger and better. A social network known as thefacebook, a site where you could keep people up to date on your life and what you are doing, your relationship status and upload photos of yourself and friends. Thefacebook began only as a Harvard social network, but following some advisement from entrepreneur Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake), former co-founder of Napster, they spread Facebook (dropping ‘the’) to Stanford, Dartmouth, Columbia, New York University, Cornell, Brown and Yale, and then to other schools with social contacts with Harvard.

Once the Winklevoss brothers and Narendra get wind of the Facebook site and success it is having they decide it is time to sue Zuckerberg. They accuse Zuckerberg of intentionally making them believe he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection, while working on Facebook the entire time. Meanwhile Facebook receives a $500K investment from Peter Thiel (co-founder of PayPal), after which they open their own offices in California. California only causes more drama as Zuckerberg betrays his long time friend and co-founder of Facebook Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield) after he unknowingly signs a share agreement that drops his shares in Facebook from 34% down to .03%, opening up another law suit against Zuckerberg. Eventually these suits would reach settlements totaling amounts that I would only dream of seeing.

“The Social Network” speaks in many codes, but the clearest one being greed. Taking you behind the scenes of the backstabbing and betrayal that will happen as a multibillion dollar company is created. Being a user of Facebook it was amazing to see how a simple idea was brought to life and turned into an astounding social experience enjoyed by myself, my parents, your children and pretty much anyone you know. “Facebook Me”…who would have thought that would be a common phrase. Now getting back to the film “The Social Network”, Zuckerberg is portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg, turning out to be his greatest work. Eisenberg has the perfected mixture of charisma and witty remarks with the right tone to make you love and hate his character at the same time.

Zuckerberg is painted in an unflattering light, but the allegations are mainly made by his former friend Eduardo Saverin in the 2009 book “The Accidental Billionaires” written by Ben Mezrich. Justin Timberlake takes another shot at acting and as before is enjoyable. “The Social Network” is addictive and clearly the best film this year. I had more fun watching “The Social Network” than I do snooping Facebook. Post a comment, tag your friends, like this post but get out and see this film!

We are giving ONE JoReviews fan a copy of this wildly entertaining film on DVD: ZOMBIELAND

REVIEW

Imagine if everything we knew had vanished. The entire city you lived in was overtaken by flesh eating zombies. This is the predictament four survivor’s face in “Zombieland”. Narrated by Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), a college student from Ohio trying to hitch his way back to his homeland and see if his parents have survived this plague. Columbus is picked up by wild man Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), an angry redneck who is suffering the loss of his “puppy”. Columbus being the reserved one with a list of how to survive the zombies is paired with the risk taking Tallahassee who has no fear when it comes to his search for a Twinkie.

During his high and low search the two have a run in with two young girls. Wichita (Emma Stone) and her younger sister Little Rock (Abagail Breslin). These two girls seem to have an agenda when it comes to survival as they quickly overtake Columbus and Tallahassee ordering them to relinquish their vehicle and weapons. The four all seem to be on a separate mission, but eventually come to rely on each other for survival.

“Zombieland” is a riot. A comedy enigma paired with some of the best music ever offered on-screen. Woody Harrelson has an amazing performance as the wild care-free Tallahassee. The story is very similar to “Shaun of the Dead” and offers that comical side in a horror film. Very thrilling and exciting from start to finish. “Zombieland” is the freshness the box office needed with its witty writing, directing and outstanding performances. A horror fans dream come true, that will also appeal to the broader audience as well.

Love Happens, Zombieland, More Than a Game, Amelia, and New York, I Love You out today!

Love, Zombies and an amazing aviatrix are what you get this week on DVD. Hitting shelves today:

Zombieland: Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) has made a habit of running from what scares him. Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) doesn’t have fears. If he did, he’d kick their ever-living ass. In a world overrun by zombies, these two are perfectly evolved survivors. But now, they’re about to stare down the most terrifying prospect of all: each other.

Love Happens: When a self-help author arrives in Seattle to teach a sold-out seminar, he unexpectedly meets the one person who might finally be able to help him help himself.

Amelia: Two-time Academy Award® Winner Hilary Swank delivers an unforgettable performance as Amelia Earhart, the legendary American aviatrix who boldly flew into the annals of history. Richard Gere co-stars as her charismatic business partner and adoring husband George Putnam. Bound by ambition and love, their enduring marriage could not be broken by Amelia’s determination to fly — nor her passionate affair with Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor). Equal parts gripping drama, stirring romance and epic adventure, AMELIA will take your breath away and send your spirit soaring!

New York, I Love You: In the city that never sleeps, love is always on the mind. Those passions come to life in a collaboration of storytelling from some of today’s most imaginative filmmakers and featuring an all-star cast. Together they create a kaleidoscope of the spontaneous, surprising, electrifying human connections that pump the city’s heartbeat. Sexy, funny, haunting and revealing encounters unfold beneath the Manhattan skyline. From Tribeca to Central Park to Brooklyn the story weaves a tale of love as diverse as the very fabric of New York itself.

More Than a Game: Five talented young basketball players from Akron, Ohio star in this remarkable true-life coming of age story about friendship and loyalty in the face of great adversity. Coached by a charismatic but inexperienced player’s father, and led by future NBA superstar LeBron James, the “Fab Five’s” improbable seven-year journey leads them from a decrepit inner-city gym to the doorstep of a national high school championship.

Along the way, the close-knit team is repeatedly tested—both on and off the court—as James’ exploding worldwide celebrity threatens to destroy everything they’ve set out to achieve together.

More Than A Game combines a series of unforgettable one-on-one interviews with rare news footage, never-before-seen home videos, and personal family photographs to bring this heart-wrenching and wholly American story to life.

"Zombieland" is the freshness the box office needed with its witty writing, directing and outstanding performances.

Duplicity, Sunshine Clearing, Fighting and Adventureland.

A good selection for the weekend. A romcom, 70s love story, action, and comedy…something for everyone. Out Tuesday:

Sunshine Clearing: Once the high school cheerleading captain who dated the quarterback, Rose Lorkowski now finds herself a thirty something single mother working as a maid. Her sister Norah is still living at home with their dad Joe, a salesman with a lifelong history of ill-fated get rich quick schemes.

Desperate to get her son into a better school, Rose persuades Norah to go into the crime scene clean-up business with her to make some quick cash. In no time, the girls are up to their elbows in murders, suicides and other…specialized situations. As they climb the ranks in a very dirty job, the sisters find a true respect for one another and the closeness they have always craved finally blossoms.

By building their own improbable business, Rose and Norah open the door to the joys and challenges of being there for one another — no matter what — while creating a brighter future for the entire Lorkowski family.

Adventureland: From the director of Superbad comes Adventureland, a smart, witty comedy we can all relate to. When James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) has to cancel his dream summer vacation and make some money for grad school, the only job he can get is at Adventureland, a tacky amusement park where the games are rigged and the rides make you hurl. But it’s where he meets Em (Kristen Stewart, Twilight), and his rollercoaster ride to nowhere turns into the best summer ever.

Fighting: Small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) knows firsthand that every day in New York City is a struggle to survive. So when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) gives him a chance to be something more in the brutal underground world of bare-knuckle street-fighting, Shawn decides that he has something worth fighting for and puts everything on the line to win. Every knockout brings him closer to the life he’s always wanted, but also traps him in a dangerous web he can’t escape.

Duplicity: Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts and Clive Owen star as two sexy spies-turned-corporate operatives who attempt to pull off one of the biggest heists ever. As the stakes rise in the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse, they’ll put everything on the line to remain one double-cross ahead of the rest.
