Surprising tale of love and perseverance.

Adam is a surprising tale of love and perseverance. Adam Raki (Hugh Dancy) is perplexed and has communication troubles. Feeling different and out of place he has sheltered himself for years, that is until his father pass’ away and he is forced to join the mainstream. Duties like grocery shopping, doing the laundry and riding the subway are foreign to Adam. Until he meets his new neighbor, Beth Buchwald (Rose Byrne), a beautiful, cosmopolitan young woman who pulls him into the outside world. The unlikely pairing proves just how far two people are willing to stretch in search of an extraordinary connection.

The connection does not come easy as Adam has been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome and sometimes does not have a filter and can’t quite understand the dimensions of a true relationship. Beth heeds all warnings and continues her friendship with Adam that leads to a romantic relationship. As with any romance there are many trials and tribulations. Given they are not the same in every relationship; they definitely will test the love the two share.

Adam is a heartfelt intriguing tale, an insightful one too. Writer Max Mayer deals with the touchy subject beautifully, and Hugh Dancy proves to be a noteworthy star with his performance. Rose Byrne as the torn lover paralleled with mixed emotions was enjoyable to watch. The chemistry between Byrne and Dancy as these two lost souls looking to each other was undeniable. Towards the end the film seemed to drag a bit, and at first I was disappointed by the ending. Giving it much thought following I changed that opinion. I don’t look at this film as a love story, but rather as an inspirational tale about Adam, a story about his disease and his ability to grow as a person. Proving that all of us deserve love and that if we are strong enough we can all pick up and search for it. This New York love story proves love does not stand for one specific thing, loving is much more meaningful. You’ll see what I mean.

Confessions of a Shopaholic, Pink Panther 2 and Inkheart out Tuesday

Several intriguing films are being released this week. One of my least favorties is the PINK PANTHER sequel, a pleasing romantic comedy starring the savy Isla Fisher and a fantasy world traveled by parent & child. This week on DVD…

CONFESSIONS OF A SHOPAHOLIC: Rebecca Bloomwood is a sweet and charming New York City girl who has a tiny, little problem that is rapidly turning into a big problem: she’s hopelessly addicted to shopping and drowning in a sea of debt. While Rebecca has dreams of working for a top fashion magazine, she can’t quite get her foot in the door—that is, until she snags a job as an advice columnist for a financial magazine published by the same company. Overnight, her column becomes hugely popular, turning her into an overnight celebrity. But when her compulsive shopping and growing debt issues threaten to destroy her love life and derail her career, she struggles to keep it all from spiraling out of control…and is ultimately forced to reevaluate what’s really important in life.

THE PINK PANTHER 2: When legendary treasures from around the world are stolen, including the priceless Pink Panther Diamond, Chief Inspector Dreyfus is forced to assign Inspector Clouseau to a team of international detectives and experts charged with catching the thief and retrieving the stolen artifacts.

INKHERAT: Based on the best-selling book by Cornelia Funke, “Inkheart” is a fantasy adventure that sends a father and daughter on a quest through worlds both real and imagined.

Mortimer “Mo” Folchart (Brendan Fraser) and his 12-year-old daughter, Meggie (Eliza Hope Bennett), share a passion for books. What they also share is an extraordinary gift for bringing characters from books to life when they read aloud. But there is a danger: when a character is brought to life from a book, a real person disappears into its pages.

On one of their trips to a secondhand book shop, Mo hears voices he hasn’t heard for years, and when he locates the book they’re coming from, it sends a shiver up his spine. It’s Inkheart, a book filled with illustrations of medieval castles and strange creatures–a book he’s been searching for since Meggie was three years old, when her mother, Resa (Sienna Guillory), vanished into its mystical world.

But Mo’s plan to use the book to find and rescue Resa is thwarted when Capricorn (Andy Serkis), the evil villain of Inkheart, kidnaps Meggie and, discovering she has inherited her father’s gift, demands that she bring his most powerful ally to life–the Shadow. Determined to rescue his daughter and send the fictional characters back where they belong, Mo assembles a small group of friends and family–some from the real world, some from the pages of books–and embarks on a daring and perilous journey to set things right.

REVIEW

With a failing economy what better way to address it then through a romantic comedy. “Confessions of a Shopaholic” is based on the novel by Sophie Kinsella and stars the adorable Isla Fisher as Rebecca Bloomwood, an aspiring journalist working her way up to her goal of writing for a fashion magazine. When she is terminated from her current job and realizes she has over $16K in debt her desperation for employment is kicked into high gear. She applies for a job with a New York City financial magazine, something she obviously knows nothing about. The interview of course is a difficult task, one that becomes even stickier when she actually gets the job.

When she receives her first assignment of writing an article about store APR’s she is stumped. Reading dummy books and goggling will not save her. Eventually she uses her shopping skills and disappointment in product to write an amazing article. With an overwhelming response to her words she creates quite a fan base and becomes known as the Girl in the Green Scarf. Rebecca becomes intrigued by her boss Luke (Hugh Dancy), who turns out to be a wealthy entrepreneur. The two immediately have sparks and although it takes sometime to develop, when it does the chemistry is undeniable. What happens to that connection when Luke learns that Rebecca not only knows nothing about finances, but that she is in debt and a shopaholic?

“Confessions of a Shopaholic” is a romantic comedy with a twist. We all have had or have credit debt and some of us hide it and are in complete denial. This is Rebecca Bloomwood’s life. Constantly avoiding the unknown number and ignoring the bills as they come in. Learning to say no I don’t really need those shoes now becomes her biggest task. Upon accepting the fact she has a problem she is able to pick up the pieces of her life and move on. Rebecca’s greatest revenge comes from getting back at her debt collector by paying off $9,000 in hand-delivered pennies. What a great idea! The love story did play backburner to the shopping, but when on screen with each other the duo ignited. Isla Fisher offered a pleasant lead performance. This is no Carrie Bradshaw for you, but comes pretty darn close. Get your best shoes on and enjoy a shopping spree that won’t hit your pocket book to hard.
