I was not impressed by the original and was pleased to find a slight satisfaction in the refreshed model.

I am not a fan of re-makes, but when I heard about the new “Footloose” I was not too discouraged. I had never viewed the original in it’s entirety until the weekend before screening the updated version. As I sat there and watched this dated (1984) dance drama I found myself hoping for more. I was not impressed by the original and was pleased to find a slight satisfaction in the refreshed model.

Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) has just moved from Boston to a small town following the untimely death of his mother. He finds he must adjust quickly to the rules set in place. No loud music, no dancing, and no cursing…what are you suppose to do. Ren soon learns that the kids in the town may follow the rules, but they are finding ways to break them to.

Ren meets the preacher’s daughter Ariel Moore (Julianne Hough) and finds her very intriguing. Something about her wild side has Ren all shook up. For Ariel it is not easy being the daughter of the small town’s pastor. Rev. Shaw Moore (Dennis Quaid) was the wheels behind the initiative of banning song and dance. Following his son’s car accident that left five students dead he felt that he needed to protect the children from another accident, insisting that music lead to other bad habits. Banning music and dancing would help prevent future tragedies.

Fighting for what he thinks it right and wanting to change the rule Ren starts a petition and plans to approach the city counsel to overturn the ban on dancing so his senior class can have a proper formal dance. It is a fight that he will take on with many friends that are ready to put on their dancing shoes.

“Footloose” was updated and enjoyable. With many classic songs you will be dancing in your seat. The music far outweighed the dancing for me. Kenny Wormald seemed more gymnastics then dance and Julianne Hough is a dancing talent that just demonstrated a lot of club moves. The variation of dance was more enjoyable than the original with the crunking, break dancing and country line dancing.

Performances were average except for one shining star. Miles Teller (Willard) was a knock out star. As Ren’s buddy from school this boy stole every scene he was in and had me laughing every second. His odd quirks were just what the film needed. Can’t wait to see what is in store for this up and comer.

If you enjoyed the original you will for sure enjoy this updated version. It is a replica of the original for the most part. You will know what to expect when you see it, with a few added comical moments. This is your time…relive it once more.

Edge of Darkness, Legion and Daybreakers.

It’s a horror filled DVD week. With three new films coming to DVD and all rated R featuring a killer, an apocalypse and vampires. Out on DVD today:

Edge of Darkness: Thomas Craven is a veteran homicide detective for the Boston Police Department and a single father. When his only child, 24-year-old Emma, is murdered on the steps of his home, everyone assumes that he was the target. But he soon suspects otherwise, and embarks on a mission to find out about his daughter’s secret life and her killing.

His investigation leads him into a dangerous looking-glass world of corporate cover-ups, government collusion and murder — and to shadowy government operative Darius Jedburgh who has been sent in to clean up the evidence. Craven’s solitary search for answers about his daughter’s death transforms into an odyssey of emotional discovery and redemption.

Legion: After a terrifying biblical apocalypse descends upon the world, a group of strangers stranded in a remote truck stop diner in the Southwest unwittingly become humanity’s last line of defense when they discover the diner’s young waitress is pregnant with the messiah.

Daybreakers: Two-time Academy Award nominee® Ethan Hawke plays Edward Dalton, a researcher in the year 2019, in which an unknown plague has transformed the world’s population into vampires. As the human population nears extinction, vampires must capture and farm every remaining human, or find a blood substitute before time runs out. However, a covert group of vampires makes a remarkable discovery, one which has the power to save the human race.

Whiteout, Pandorum, The Invetion of Lying and Gamer.

Not a great week in the DVD community. I found myself not impressed by the films coming out today, but perhaps you will find something you enjoy. Out on DVD today:

Gamer: GAMER is a high-concept action thriller set in a near future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online games: people play people… for keeps. Mind-control technology is widespread, and at the heart of the controversial games is its creator, reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall). His latest brainchild, the first-person shooter game “Slayers,” allows millions to act out their most savage fantasies online in front of a global audience, using real prisoners as avatars with whom they fight to the death.

Kable (300′s Gerard Butler) is the superstar and cult hero of the ultraviolent “Slayers.” Kable is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock star status who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week. Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, the modern day gladiator must survive long enough to escape the game to free his family, regain his identity and to save mankind from Castle’s ruthless technology.

The Invention of Lying: In an alternate reality, lying – even the concept of a lie – does not even exist. Everyone – from politicians to advertisers to the man and woman on the street – speaks the truth and nothing but the truth with no thought of the consequences.

But when a down-on-his-luck loser named Mark suddenly develops the ability to lie, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards. In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark easily lies his way to fame and fortune. But lies have a way of spreading, and Mark begins to realize that things are getting a little out of control when some of his tallest tales are being taken as, well, gospel. With the entire world now hanging on his every word, there is only one thing Mark has not been able to lie his way into: the heart of the woman he loves.

Pandorum: When two men emerge from a deep sleep in the middle of space, they discover that they have no memories of who they are and where they’re going. But their memory loss pales in comparison to the problem of the murderous warriors on board their ship who don’t want to leave anyone alive.

Whiteout: After two years stationed at Antarctica’s South Pole research base, lone U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) is as anxious as anyone to be going home. She’s turned in her resignation and is counting the hours and minutes to the last plane out. But three days before departure, a body turns up on the ice and Carrie is immediately thrust into Antarctica’s first murder investigation. As the death toll mounts, the mystery deepens with shifting loyalties, deadly whiteouts, and a relentless killer who will stop at nothing to protect a secret buried for over sixty years. Now with everyone around her packing up and getting out, Carrie must solve the crime before Antarctica is plunged into six months of darkness and she is stranded with the killer on a land where nothing comes in and no one gets out.

It’s starting to get cold outside, what better than a night in with your favorite DVD. There are four selections to choose from for your viewing pleasure. Out on DVD today:

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra: Based on Hasbro’s immensely popular action figures, G.I. Joe is the ultimate elite fighting force, engaged in an extraordinary action-adventure matchup of good versus evil! In G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the G.I. Joe team, armed with the coolest hi-tech gadgets and weapons, travels the world from the Egyptian desert to the polar ice caps in a high stakes pursuit of Cobra, an evil international organization threatening to use a technology that could bring the world to its knees.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3: In The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Denzel Washington stars as New York City subway dispatcher Walter Garber, whose ordinary day is thrown into chaos by an audacious crime: the hijacking of a subway train. John Travolta stars as Ryder, the criminal mastermind who, as leader of a highly-armed gang of four, threatens to execute the train’s passengers unless a large ransom is paid within one hour. As the tension mounts beneath his feet, Garber employs his vast knowledge of the subway system in a battle to outwit Ryder and save the hostages. But there’s one riddle Garber can’t solve: even if the thieves get the money, how can they possibly escape?

Aliens in the Attic: Kids on a family vacation must fight off an attack by knee-high alien invaders with world-destroying ambitions — while the youngsters’ parents remain clueless about the battle.

I Love You, Beth Cooper: Buffalo Grove High School valedictorian Denis Cooverman (PAUL RUST) has had quite an academic career…on paper, at least. Superlative student, conscientious young gentleman and patently obvious dork, Denis has played it safe and made it all the way to graduation day without ever having really experienced some of the joys of higher learning: breaking curfew, destruction of property, over-consumption of alcohol, fist fights, late nights, fast cars or faster women (actually, women of any sort).

Lymelife, Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past, Battle for Terra and Observe & Report

A romantic comedy and a dark comedy paired with sci fi and drama. This week’s films coming out on DVD are:

Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past: Celebrity photographer Connor Mead loves freedom, fun and women… in that order. A committed bachelor who thinks nothing of breaking up with multiple women on a conference call, Connor’s mockery of romance proves a real buzz-kill for his kid brother, Paul, and a houseful of well wishers on the eve of Paul’s wedding.

Just when it looks like Connor may single-handedly ruin the wedding, he is visited by the ghosts of his former jilted girlfriends, who take him on a revealing and hilarious odyssey through his failed relationships–past, present and future. Together they attempt to find out what turned Connor into such an insensitive jerk and whether there is still hope for him to find true love…or if he really is the lost cause everyone thinks he is.

Observe & Report: At the Forest Ridge Mall, head of security Ronnie Barnhardt (SETH ROGEN) patrols his jurisdiction with an iron fist. The master of his domain, he combats skateboarders, shoplifters and the occasional unruly customer while dreaming of the day when he can swap his flashlight for a badge and a gun.

Ronnie’s delusions of grandeur are put to the test when the mall is struck by a flasher. Driven by his personal duty to protect and serve the mall and its patrons, Ronnie seizes the opportunity to showcase his under-appreciated law enforcement talents on a grand scale, hoping his solution of this crime will earn him a coveted spot at the police academy and the heart of his elusive dream girl Brandi (ANNA FARIS), the hot make-up counter clerk who won’t give him the time of day.

But his single-minded pursuit of glory launches a turf war with the equally competitive Detective Harrison (RAY LIOTTA) of the Conway Police, and Ronnie is confronted with the challenge of not only catching the flasher, but getting him before the real cops.

Battle for Terra: When the peaceful inhabitants of the beautiful planet Terra come under attack from the last surviving members of humanity adrift in an aging spaceship, the stage is set for an all-out war between the two species for control of the planet. But will an unlikely friendship between a rebellious young Terrian (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood) and an injured human pilot (Luke Wilson) somehow convince their leaders that war is not the answer?

Lymelife: 15-year old Scott Bartlett’s family life is turned upside-down after an outbreak of Lyme disease hits the community spreading illness and paranoia. Scott’s parents — a workaholic father, Mickey, and an overprotective mother, Brenda — are on the verge of a divorce as his older brother Jim is about to ship off for war. Complicating matters, Scott has fallen in love with his next door neighbor, Adrianna Bragg. Adrianna seems to be the only person in the world who understands Scott demonstrated by her equally troubled, less affluent family including an uptight mother, Melissa, carrying on a not-so-clandestine love affair, and a father, Charlie, slowly slipping away from the effects of Lyme disease.
