Valentine's Day, Invictus, The Spy Next Door, Extraordinary Measures and The Messenger.

It is a busy movie week with five new releases coming out. Love, history and science…with so many choices what will your’s be. Out on DVD today:

Valentine’s Day: An all-star ensemble cast comes together in “Valentine’s Day,” which follows the intertwining storylines of a diverse group of Los Angelenos as they navigate their way through romance and heartbreak over the course of one Valentine’s Day. Couples and singles experience the pinnacles and pitfalls of finding, keeping or ending relationships in a day in the life of love.

Invictus: The film tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

The Spy Next Door: THE SPY NEXT DOOR stars Jackie Chan as Bob Ho, an undercover CIA superspy who decides to give up his career in espionage to settle down with his next-door neighbor and girlfriend, Gillian (Amber Valletta). But Bob has one more mission to complete before Gillian agrees to marry him: winning over her three opinionated kids.

When Gillian suddenly has to leave town, Bob volunteers to babysit the children so he can earn their approval. But when one of the kids mistakenly downloads a top-secret formula from his computer, Bob’s archenemy, a Russian terrorist, moves in for the attack, forcing Bob to juggle the roles of spy and prospective stepfather in the most challenging mission of his career!

Extraordinary Measures: Inspired by a true story, this drama is centered on the efforts of John and Aileen Crowley to find a researcher who might have a cure for their two children’s rare genetic disorder. From the Academy Award® winning screenwriter of Chocolat and Producers of Erin Brockovich! Based on the Wall Street Journal article and subsequent book, “The Cure”, by Pulitzer Prize – winning writer Geeta Anand.

The Messenger: Partnered with a hard-line officer Tony Stone (Academy Award® Nominee Woody Harrelson), Ben Foster (3:10 to Yuma) plays a battle-scarred war hero home from Iraq and newly assigned to the Army’s Casualty Notification service. He faces this formidable mission while seeking comfort and healing back on the home front when he falls for the wife of a fallen soldier (2-Time Academy Award nominee Samantha Morton).

INVICTUS

From director Clint Eastwood, “Invictus” tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Spyglass Entertainment, a Revelations Entertainment/Mace Neufeld production, a Malpaso production, “Invictus,” starring Oscar® winners Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby,” “The Dark Knight”) and Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” the “Bourne” franchise).

Jenna: Million Dollar Baby

Brett: Every Which Way But Loose

Dana: Bridges of Madison County was my favorite movie starring Clint Eastwood. I’ve had a crush on him since he was a cowboy on the TV series Rawhide. That dates me certainly, but I’ve seen all his movies. It was nice to see him play a role where he wasn’t shooting a gun! : )

William: million dollar baby how he takes hillary swank in as if she is family and took care of her even though he was teaching her to box.

Kelsey: Mystic River!

Phil: Unforgiven as the rugged man who had to do his duty.

Eduardo: I think that some of his best work so far is the grandturino.

Bruce: I would have to say by far, Letters from Iwo Jima really stood out from amongst his extensive body of work. I know it was a two sided story with the other side being told through the movie Flag of Our fathers, but this one shined bright as it gave an often stark look at war and how it was seen through the eyes of the Japanese.

Jill: Honkey Tonk Man… he is AMAZING at the end of that film… a kind, messed up man, who you wanted to hate, but grew to love… and the movie was with his son. LOVED his work in that movie… and he sang! =)

Raysa: Grand Tarino

Diana: Gran Torino

Luke: Dirty Harry! Duh!!!

Diana: Grand Torino- He played such a diverse character- not used to seeing him play that kind of bad boy, used to seeing him as a cowboy or some other rough neck, outstanding work.

Nik: Dirty Harry

Shelley: Unforgiven

Christy: Million Dollar Baby

Martha: Dirty Harry

Charles: Unforgiven

Bridget: Dirty Dozen

Shaunta: Grand Terino

Amar: Million Dollar Baby

Levera: Dirty Harry because he kick butt

Rachel: Gran Torino. He was so haunting and amazing!!!

Amanada: His best work was in Gran Torino. That movie was amazing and he was the reason why it was.

Lauren: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

John: I have to divide my answer into categories. I think Mr. Eastwood’s (total respect for the man) best acting was his last role in Gran Torino. It was a believable character that required different emotions, come on he actually sheds a tear in that film..
His best directing job was Letters from Iwo Jima, that was a brilliant idea and a fantastic film.
The first R rated film that I saw was Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. I went with my Dad who was embarrassed about the sex scenes in that movie. I was 14 and back then did not go to the movies very often.

Dave: Grand Trinio

Robert: Dirty Harry, without a doubt.

Diane: Dirty Harry

Harriet: Gran Torino because his character was tough, yet he had a super nice side that helped to very great kids make it through bad neighborhood.

Khadijah: I’m not that old and really haven’t got into all that yet but I did like Gran Torino , Million Dollar Baby, and my moms turned me on to Dirty Harry, Letters to Iwo Jimo. Those are a few GREAT works, Jo…

Jonna: Million Dollar Baby – Just a great movie all the way around.

Pamela: Every movie he has done

Michelle: Grand Torino

John: In the Line of Fire. He used all of his best acting traits to make the character come to life.

Tyler: dirty hairy

RJ: bloodwork…although he did extremely well in gran torino.

Nathan: dirty hary

Amy: Dirty Harry. All of them. Loved him then and love him now. Enjoy sharing with my sons!

Peggy: Gran Torino

Virginia: The Bridges of Madison County – a real tear jerker. even reading the book made me cry!

Virginia: Gran Torino – best old fart ever!

Ginny: The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly – best spaghetti western ever!

Virginia: Dirty Harry – cool cop!

Ginny: “Million Dollar Baby” – great acting & directing. Really brought out the best in Hillary Swank.

Jon: Unforgiven. No question.

Paul: Gran Torino (2008)

Isaac: Gran Torino. So good at being a racist old man. We all know a number of people (mostly over a certain age) that have similar opinions. And they usually aren’t bad people, they just won’t win any PC awards.

Larry: DIRTY HARRY/UNFORGIVEN

Laurie: A PERFECT WORLD/MILLION DOLLAR BABY

REVIEW

Clint Eastwood steps back, no make that bangs back in front of the camera for one hell of a role. Eastwood stars as Walt Kowalski in “Gran Torino”, who is a recent widower that seems angry at the World. Walt is a veteran of the Korean War and spends his days and nights watching his neighborhood change. He faces the challenge of accepting his neighbors who are Hmong and also dealing with the violence that has incorporated in the area due to gangs. Walt’s anger boils over when his kid neighbor, Thao Vang Lor (Bee Vang) breaks into his garage at an attempt to steal his Gran Torino. Thao is not a bad kid he is just unsure of who he is and does not know where he fits in. After being coerced by his cousin, who happens to be a gang member, Thao decides to steal the Torino for the group of hoodlums. His attempt is foiled when Walt awakes to the disturbance.

Walt immediately is disgusted with Thao, but his sister Sue (Ahney Her) fights for his behalf and tries to explain to Walt that he is not a thief. Thao’s mother begs for Walt to let Thao make up for his mistakes in anyway he can. She allows Thao to work for Walt until he has cleared his conscience of his wrong doing. Walt puts Thao to work in the neighborhood by cleaning things up and helping him out with whatever he needs. Walt eventually softens up on Sue’s behalf and even attends a family BBQ at their home. Walt does not make many friends immediately, but his mannered side begins to shine through as he visits with the family. Walt even eventually befriends Thao.

Over the next few months Thao and Walt become very close friends. Walt gets Thao a job and even lets him borrow his Torino. An unexpected tragedy then occurs that send Thao and Walt into a raging frenzy. Walt is determined to keep Thao safe and out of harms way and to handle things on his own. Walt is a strong and independent being and is a very wise old man. That being said Walt puts a plan into attack and has every intention on following it through to the end.

“Gran Torino” is a tale from an older man’s perspective. The outlook for this bigoted old man who by a series of events opens his mind up to the idea of letting go of the past and acceptance of things for what they are. I am sure many people will be offended by this film, but if you can stick out through the many racist comments in the beginning you will find this film comes full circle. The movie is about educating audiences on being open minded and that if one old man’s view can be changed than perhaps we can have hope for others alike. Clint Eastwood was on top of his game, taking us back to vintage Dirty Harry offering a remarkable performance that had me begging for more. Not only was his handy work on camera, but Eastwood directed this grand film as well. “Gran Torino” will knock your socks off, but be prepared to have some ear bleeding after all the graphic comments and cussing you will hear.

Gran Torino, The International and Fired Up out Tuesday!

One of my top ten films is out on DVD this week. Along for the ride is an exciting thriller and a cheer squard…I am not sure what your choice would be, but I would choose Gran Torino. It won’t dissapoint.

Gran Torino: Retired auto worker Walt Kowalski fills his days with home repair, beer, and monthly trips to the barber. Though his late wife’s final wish was for him to take confession, for Walt–an embittered veteran of the Korean War who keeps his M-1 rifle cleaned and ready–there’s nothing to confess. And no one he trusts enough to confess to other than his dog, Daisy.

The people he once called his neighbors have all moved or passed away, replaced by the Hmong immigrants he despises. Resentful of virtually everything he sees–the drooping eaves, overgrown lawns and the foreign faces surrounding him; the aimless gangs of Hmong, Latino and African American teenagers who all think the neighborhood belongs to them; the callow strangers his children have grown up to be–Walt is just waiting out the rest of his life.

Until the night someone tries to steal his Gran Torino.

Still gleaming as it did the day Walt himself helped roll it off the assembly line decades ago, the Gran Torino brings his shy teenaged neighbor Thao (Bee Vang) into his life when Hmong gang-bangers pressure the boy into trying to steal it.

But Walt stands in the way of both the heist and the gang, making him the reluctant hero of the neighborhood–especially to Thao’s mother and older sister, Sue (Ahney Her), who insist that Thao work for Walt as a way to make amends. Though he initially wants nothing to do with these people, Walt eventually gives in and puts the boy to work fixing up the neighborhood, setting into motion an unlikely friendship that will change both their lives.

Through Thao and his family’s unrelenting kindness, Walt eventually comes to understand certain truths about the people next door. And about himself. These people–provincial refugees from a cruel past–have more in common with Walt than he has with his own family, and reveal to him parts of his soul that have been walled off since the war…like the Gran Torino preserved in the shadows of his garage.

The International: In The International, a gripping thriller, Interpol Agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) are determined to bring to justice one of the world’s most powerful banks. Uncovering myriad and reprehensible illegal activities, Salinger and Whitman follow the money from Berlin to Milan to New York to Istanbul. Finding themselves in a high-stakes chase across the globe, their relentless tenacity puts their own lives at risk as their targets will stop at nothing – even murder – to continue financing terror and war. Directed by Tom Tykwer from an original screenplay written by Eric Warren Singer, The International was shot on location in Germany and throughout Europe.

Fired Up:Shawn Colfax and Nick Brady, the stars of the Gerald R. Ford High School football team, are dreading the prospect of another summer at football camp. When Nick hatches a scheme for the two to join their school’s cheerleaders at cheer camp instead, they find themselves awash in a sea of gorgeous young women. It all goes great until Shawn falls for Carly, the beautiful head cheerleader who sees right through them.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Body of Lies, Changeling, and Quarantine on DVD Tuesday.

This week is a big week for DVD releases. From a pop culture hit Disney show to Academy Award nominated actress Angelina Jolie in Changeling. With so much to choose from what will your pick be? Here are the options:

Body of Lies: Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Roger Ferris who is fighting terrorists for the CIA in this thriller from director Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR, BLACK HAWK DOWN). While Ferris gets his hands dirty on the teeming Arab streets, his handler Ed Hoffman (Russell Crowe) watches from Washington via spy satellite. Innocent lives are lost, buildings blow up, and the threat of winding up beheaded on the internet is always one move away.

Changeling: My #1 film of the year. Changeling is a powerful and heart jerking true story. The amazing Angelina Jolie takes you back to the 1920’s era and you feel her pain and desperation for closure. The other wow factor is offered from Clint Eastwood, behind the camera, again offering another stellar role as director. This film is one to take notice at. With a powerful performance and storyline you won’t be left dissatisfied. This film is up for grabs in the freebies section.

Quarantine: An adaptation of the 2007 Spanish film REC, Quarantine chronicles the outbreak of a rabies-like disease in a Los Angeles apartment building and the struggle of the unaffected residents to stay alive after the authorities trap them inside in an effort to contain it. Film is presented through the eye of a video camera, putting the audience in the middle of the action and creating a heightened level of intensity and realism. Television reporter Angela (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman, Scott (Steve Harris), are covering the goings-on at a firehouse for a program about night shift workers. Then all hell breaks loose, unfortunately for Angela and the rest of the uninfected residents, the authorities have quarantined the building—but she and Scott continue to document the tragic and terrifying events inside the building as those inside are one by one transformed into bloodthirsty monsters.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year: The first High School Musical movie to be released straight to the silver screen finds the cast of the beloved earlier installments, all students at East High, dealing with the ups and downs of senior year. While all the characters have their own dilemmas, the central issue, as in past films, is the relationship between sweethearts Troy (Zac Efron), the captain of East High’s Wildcats basketball team, and the bookish Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), who face the possibility of imminent separation when Gabriella gets a chance to attend college early. With this third outing in the wildly popular Disney series, director Kenny Ortega takes full advantage of HSM3′s big-screen leap, staging musical numbers that go far beyond the scope of the movie’s predecessors (see the lavish “I Want It All” by resident East High diva Sharpay, played by Ashley Tisdale). As an added bonus this week we are giving away this DVD in our freebies section. Take the quiz and answer correctly to win!!

Changeling offers powerful performance and storyline that won't leave you dissatisfied.

“Changeling” stars the talented Angelina Jolie as Christine Collins. Set back in the era of 1920′s Christine is a single working mother. Upon being called into work one day she leaves her young son at home. When she returns home she finds him missing. After a reluctant search of the neighborhood for him she calls authorities only to be told it is too early to report him as missing and to call back later. As days turn into months it looks as if the distraught mother may never be reunited with her son. Until one day out of the blue a young boy claims to be her son Walter. Christine’s prayers have been answered when he son returns home. Only thing is Walter is not the same Walter that left. Immediately Christine is convinced this boy is not her son and tells the Detective who only manipulates her into believing it is her son, it has been a long time and to give him a chance to get back into his routine.

It does not take long for Christine to confirm this is not her son. As her demands to the police department to further investigate this fall on deaf ears she takes matters into her own hands. She confronts them head on, first by alerting the media that the LAPD made a mistake and brought back a boy that is not her son and are refusing to investigate any further into her case. Her desperate search for her son causes her to take on the police who in turn fight back. They paint Christine as an unfit mother and label her as insane and sentence her to a stay at the psych ward. Her only ally being local activist Reverend Briegleb (John Malkovich), who takes notice when Christine is missing.

Christine is a strong woman who is challenging the system and putting her life on the line in the desperate search for her son. Will her son ever be found? Changeling is a powerful and heart jerking true story. The amazing Angelina Jolie takes you back to the 1920′s era and you feel her pain and desperation for closure. The other wow factor is offered from Clint Eastwood, behind the camera, again offering another stellar role as director. This film is one to take notice at. With a powerful performance and storyline you won’t be left dissatisfied.
