“Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is a wonderful movie filed with imagination for every child.

I have to admit the trailer does not do this film justice. The title let alone would steer most people away. “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is an adorable tale about a successful businessman whose life is turned upside down when he inherits six penguins from his father. Jim Carrey is Mr. Popper, who is looking to partner at his firm which specializes in property purchasing. Everything is on track until he learns of his father’s death and inherits a special creature from Antarctica.

Not one but six penguins. Immediately Mr. Popper does everything he can to rid himself of the obnoxious birds, but he quickly has a change of heart when he sees how excited his children Janie (Madeline Carroll) and Billy (Maxwell Perry Cotton) are about the penguin pack. Concerned for the penguin’s health and ability to thrive he changes his New York apartment into a Winter Wonderland, offering the penguins a natural habitat.

Despite the cold and constant challenges Mr. Popper becomes a father all over again and cares for every penguin as if they were his own. When Mr. Popper’s new life style threatens his career and family ties he has some hard decisions to make, and in the end looks like a true hero. Children will love every second of the amusement these penguins offer. It’s ‘Happy Feet’ but only the live version.

Who needs 3D and animation when you have Mr. Popper? “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is a wonderful movie filed with imagination for every child. A perfect family film that adults will love to the very end. Going in I did not have high expectations. Who would expect Jim Carrey in a children’s comedy and not find it to be outrageous, but he surprised me in this heartfelt story. “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” the best family film this year and a must for the summer!

District 9, (500) Days of Summer, All About Steve and Extract out today!

A fresh batch of alien sci-fi, story of boy meets girl, a romantic comedy and a comedy from the creator of Office Space. New to DVD this week is:

District 9: Twenty-eight years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world.

The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argue over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens’ welfare – they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens’ awesome weaponry work.

(500) Days of Summer: In this quirky romantic comedy about love and fate, a young greeting card writer (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is hopelessly, helplessly searching for the girl of his dreams…and his new co-worker, Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), may just be “the one.” But the 500 days of their offbeat relationship reveal (in no particular order) that the road to happiness can be unpredictable, uncontrollable—and unbelievably funny!

All About Steve: “The Proposal’s” Sandra Bullock, Oscar® nominee Thomas Haden Church, and “The Hangover’s” Bradley Cooper star in a hilarious tale of a woman who, after falling hard for a guy, thinks they’re an item; unfortunately, he thinks she’s stalking him!

Bullock’s Mary Horowitz is a cruciverbalist – a crossword puzzle constructor. Her brain spins at warp speed with an endless stream of arcane information. She can come up with the perfect word – and dozens with the same meaning – at a moment’s notice, but “normal” behavior eludes her.

Take, for example, the fact that she lives with eccentric parents. Or her inability to engage in social intercourse without dropping a litany of twenty-dollar words and unleashing a tsunami of trivia. Then, there’s the matter of her omnipresent fire-engine-red go-go boots.

For Mary, nothing is typical, especially relationships. When she is set up on a blind date with handsome cable-news cameraman Steve, Mary thinks the chemistry is undeniable – that Steve is “the one.” Steve, on the other hand, thinks Mary is crazy. Mary, who just knows she’s found her soul mate, decides to do anything and go anywhere to be with him. She begins to pursue Steve relentlessly as he crisscrosses the country, covering breaking news stories.

Mary’s escalating infatuation with Steve is encouraged by the self-serving actions of news reporter Hartman Hughes (Thomas Haden Church), who enjoys torturing his insolent cameraman at every opportunity. With Mary never far behind and Hartman urging her on, Steve becomes increasingly unhinged.

But when Mary becomes embroiled in the news story of the year, Steve and Hartman begin to see her differently. Hartman is plagued by guilt, knowing his game of one-upmanship with Steve has placed her squarely in harms way, while Steve is feeling his own pangs of remorse at his callous behavior. Despite the media storm surrounding her, Mary with her upbeat, unaffected manner brings together a small community of new friends. And all who encounter Mary will realize that sometimes the ones who don’t fit in are the ones who really stand out.

Extract: Joel is one step away from selling his flavor extract factory and retiring to easy street when a freak workplace accident sets in motion a series of disasters that put his business and personal life in jeopardy.

A brilliant film that has me falling in love with all 500 days.

“500 Days of Summer” is a refreshing and offbeat romantic comedy about a woman (Zooey Deschanel) who doesn’t believe true love exists, and the young man (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for her. Tom (Gordon-Levitt) is a greeting card writer who is single searching for his soul mate to complete him. He comes to life the day he meets Summer (Deschanel). Summer does not have an immediate connection to Tom, but as Tom shows his sensitive and boyish charm she begins to find interest in him. The interest soon turns to a mutual relationship.

Not an easy love story as Summer is not a believer in love or relationships. What they have is unknown to Tom, as he questions her after she claims she is not his ‘girlfriend’. Finding it difficult to understand her reasoning for not believing in something he finds sacred makes it difficult for the pair to move forward and eventually Summer ends things. Tom does not rebound well as he goes on a sabbatical of drinking, rage and eventually quits his job. As Tom moves away from greeting card writing to pursue becoming an architect he has a chance meeting with Summer that brings the pair back together, but by this time it is too late.

A modern day tale that will be crowd pleasing. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt make “500 Days of Summer” the best romantic comedy in years. These two performers steal this summer’s box office with the entertaining and realistic look at falling in and out of love. Marc Webb directs this film brilliantly and makes us fall in love with everything from all 500 days. Adding the best music to this already appealing film makes this a homerun. “500 Days of Summer” will not just be this summer’s greatest hit, but will be one you will remember and want to see months later.
