2012, Where the Wild Things Are, Ponyo and The Private Lives of Pippa Lee out on DVD.

The little ones will have movies to be excited over this week, along with a story about the end of the World for the adult crowd. Hitting shelves this week on DVD:

2012: Dr. Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is part of a worldwide geophysical team investigating the effect radiation from unprecedented solar storms is having on the earth. Helmsley learns that the earth’s core is heating up. He warns U.S. President Thomas Wilson (Danny Glover) that the crust of the earth is becoming unstable and unless they steps to prepare for saving a fraction of the world’s population, the entire race is doomed. Meanwhile, writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) stumbles on the same information. While the world’s leaders race to build “arks” to escape the impending cataclysm, Curtis struggles to find a way to save his family. Meanwhile, volcanic eruptions and earthquakes of unprecedented strength wreak havoc around the world.

Where the Wild Things Are: Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are. He lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought.

Ponyo: Welcome to a world where anything is possible! Academy Award–winning director Hayao Miyazaki (2002, Best Animated Feature, Spirited Away) and legendary filmmaker John Lasseter together with Disney bring to life a heartwarming and imaginative telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid. Plus, this 2-disc DVD and Blu-ray includes never-before-seen bonus features that take you on a journey deep into the film’s enchanted world. A young boy named Sosuke rescues a goldfish named Ponyo, and they embark on a fantastic journey of friendship and discovery before Ponyo’s father, a powerful sorcerer, forces her to return to her home in the sea. In defiance, Ponyo releases the magical water of life, and chaos reigns until balance is restored to the world they cherish. Ponyo will delight your family with its magnificent animation and timeless story.

The Private Lives of Pippa Lee: From all outward appearances, Pippa Lee (Wright Penn) leads a charmed existence. She is the devoted wife of an accomplished publisher (Arkin) thirty years her senior, the proud mother of two grown children, and a trusted friend and confidant to all who cross her path. But as Pippa dutifully follows her husband to a new life in a staid Connecticut retirement community, her idyllic world and the persona she has built over the course of her marriage will be put to the ultimate test.

In truth, looks are deceiving, and this picture-perfect woman has seen more than her fair share of turmoil in her youth. Embarking on a bittersweet journey or self-discovery, accompanied by a new, strange and soulful acquaintance (Reeves), Pippa must now confront both her volatile past and the hidden resentment of her seemingly perfect life in order to find her true sense of self.

Monsters vs. Aliens, Away We Go, The Brothers Bloom, Management and Shrink out today!

Five blockbusters are coming out this week. With a wide selection, what will you choose? Choices are:

Monsters vs. Aliens: When Susan Murphy is unexpectedly clobbered by a meteor full of outer space gunk, she mysteriously grows to 49-feet-11-inches tall and is instantly labeled a “Monster” named Ginormica. The military jumps into action, and she is captured and held in a secret government compound filled with other “monsters” like herself.

This ragtag group consists of the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, P.H.D.; the macho half-Ape-half-fish The Missing Link; the gelatinous and indestructible B.O.B.; and the 350-foot grub called Insectosaurus. Their confinement time is cut short however, when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and the motley crew of Monsters is called into action to save the world from imminent destruction.

Away We Go: Directed by Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty) from an original screenplay by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, this funny and heartfelt film follows the journey of an expectant couple (John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph), as they travel the U.S. in search of the perfect place to put down roots and raise their family. Along the way, they have misadventures and find fresh connections with an assortment of relatives and old friends who just might help them discover “home” on their own terms for the first time. The movie features the music of Alexi Murdoch.

The Brother’s Bloom: Welcome to the world of The Brothers Bloom, where deception is an art and nothing is as it seems. The brothers have perfected the art of swindling fortunes through years of fraternal teamwork. Now they’ve decided to take on one last spectacular job—luring a beautiful and eccentric heiress into an elaborate plot that takes them around the world.

For as long as they can remember, the Brothers Bloom have had only each other to depend on. From their childhood in a long series of gloomy foster homes to their highflying lives as international con artists, Stephen (Mark Ruffalo) and Bloom (Adrien Brody) have shared everything. Stephen brilliantly concocts intricate stories that the brothers live out, but he’s still searching for the perfect con, the one where “everyone gets what they want.” Meanwhile, Bloom yearns for “an unwritten life”—a real adventure, one not dreamed up by his old brother.

Eager to retire, Bloom agrees to take part in one last grand scam. He insinuates himself into the life of Penelope (Rachel Wiesz), a bored, single New Jersey heiress. When a genuine romance begins to blossom between them, he is reluctant to exploit her naiveté, but Penelope has already taken the bait: She impulsively joins Bloom, Stephen and their “associate,” a sexy Japanese explosives expert named Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi), on an ocean liner to Greece. Penelope is convinced she’s happened upon the adventure of a lifetime and offers to bankroll a million dollar deal. As the quartet makes their way from Athens to Prague to Mexico to St. Petersburg, Penelope quickly becomes addicted to the illicit thrills. But as Stephen’s elaborate web of deceit pulls tighter, Bloom begins to wonder if his brother has devised the most dangerous con of his life.

Management: MANAGEMENT is a romantic comedy that chronicles a chance meeting between Mike Cranshaw (Steve Zahn) and Sue Claussen (Jennifer Aniston). When Sue checks into the roadside motel owned by Mike’s parents in Arizona, what starts with a bottle of wine “compliments of MANAGEMENT” soon evolves into a multi-layered, cross-country journey of two people looking for a sense of purpose. Mike, an aimless dreamer, bets it all on a trip to Sue’s workplace in Maryland – only to find that she has no place for him in her carefully ordered life. Buttoned down and obsessed with making a difference in the world, Sue goes back to her yogurt mogul ex-boyfriend Jango (Woody Harrelson), who promises her a chance to head his charity operations. But, having found something worth fighting for, Mike pits his hopes against Sue’s practicality, and the two embark on a twisted, bumpy, freeing journey to discover that their place in the world just might be together.

Shrink: What happens when the people we count on to hold us together… are barely holding it together themselves? Jonas Pate’s Shrink is a striking, fast-paced exposé of the “other” Hollywood, featuring folks living outside their comfort zone and the people who put them there. Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is a psychiatrist with an A-list clientele, including a once-famous actress (Saffron Burrows), an insecure young writer (Mark Webber), and a comically obsessive-compulsive superagent (Dallas Roberts).

Henry is not in a good place, however. He has been asked to take his first pro bono case, a troubled teenage girl from a neighborhood far from the Hollywood hills. Considering his present state of mind, is he ready for the real-life troubles of a young woman who loves the world of movies he has become so jaded by?

At its core, Shrink is a study of control and our endless need for it, even when it grows increasingly impossible to obtain. Writer Thomas Moffett uses classic archetypes in this modern Hollywood tale, but never pushes them over the edge of credibility. Performed by a well-matched cast at the top of their form, the result is both satisfying and exhilarating. Watching Shrink makes us feel like voyeurs looking through a window into the lives of people who look great, feel worse, and end up behaving badly.

Janette: I grew up in the ’80s, and this book doesn’t look like anything else that was done then or has been done since. It’s so unique! It’s illustration style is one-of-a-kind, and its “dusty” color palette captures an emotion that is just the right amount of scary, for both kids and adults alike. Even though I don’t remember the book’s story line precisely, I could never forget its mood. I can’t wait to see how Spike Jonze translates it to the big screen.

Lakeisha: I remember it being a grand adventre. a grand imaginary land

Susan: I remember sitting in the rocking chair and reading it to my daughters.

Terry: I remember reading the book with a combination of excitement and fear. I thought it was great how the kid got to off and have all these great adventures, but I sat in that at any given moment the Wild Things could snap and eat him alive. Weird, right?

Luis: I actually never read this as a kid nor was it read to me because my parents only spoke Spanish. I can, however, recall the look on my little girl’s face as I read it to her for the first time when she was six…she’s 8 now and it’s still her favorite. Can’t wait to take her.

Amanda: I remember being sooooooooooooooo scared that there were monsters in my room. I used to make my parents check under my bed and in my closet about 20 times!! I couldn’t even have my closet door be cracked or a would stare wide eyed at it waiting for a creature to stare back! Then one night my dad brought out his tattered and torn copy from his childhood of “Where the Wild Things are” and we read it together from then on every night! It sat right next to my Bible:) ha!

Amanda: I remember my dad reading his childhood copy to me in bed!!

Jerome: I remember reading this book in my bed and falling asleep, and I had some wild, borderline scary dreams that night. I still remember that night vividly, even though it was almost 20 years ago.

Shelby: I remember my grandpa reading it to me when I was really little. I think I had just started kindergarden. He was the best story-teller. I fell in love with the book immediately. I adore the story. Every time I clean my room out, I reread the tale, and fall back in love with it. Best book ever written.

Jason: I remember the images more than the story itself. I always liked the design of the wild things and the style of the illustrations. I’m really looking forward to seeing the wild things come to life.

Kathy: I remember reading this book over and over again to my son, Josh. We would act out the characters and he always kept this book close to his bed.
My son is a collector of toys and when he lived at home he had the Wild Thing characters hanging on his wall.
He know reads this to his son!

Jonathan: I remember all the fun adventures max had in his room with the monsters!!!!

Kimberly: I remember when my mom would read it to me everynight…..that was the only book i Wanted to hear before i went to bed.

Drahomira: I remember that I was hoping to see it as a movie and to compare my fantasies with someone elses.

Marie: I remember reading this book from the time I was 2 years old. My mom would read it and act out all of the characters with different voices and gestures. I had read it so many times that I could recite it word for word from memory, so I’d recite the book and my two little sisters and I would spend hours pretending we were the wild things. It was always so much fun! Now, I do the same thing with my boyfriend’s daughter. She’s almost got it down word for word too!

Cheree: I remember reading this book with my grandma. Reading was how we bonded.

Adam: I remember my oldest brother handing me his copy in the early 90s as my first book I ever owned myself. It was a book that was so imaginative and engaging that I remember reading it over and over and doing my own drawings of these characters with myself as the king.

Steve: My wife and I were talking about this movie last night. She’s got some great childhood memories of this book and other books that gave a similar experience. It was fun to listen to her since although I’ve never read the book, she brought that feeling of being a kid again out of me. I could smell the school hallways, tell you how much dirt & grass was by the school bus stop, the smell my grandfather’s car use to make, etc.

Tim: I remember reading the book to my daughter, she was always scared something was in the room or closet at night. The book seemed to turn the boogie men into not so scary animals. The book is still around today.

Shelley: I remember reading this for the first time at a student teacher and wondering why I had never read it before. I think I was more interested in it than the kids.

Juanita: I remember reading it to my sons when they were very young and how they enjoyed looking at the pictures as I read to them. Many times they would stop me and ask me questions about how the story might end and if they could be one of the characters in the story. How cute is that!

Lindsay: I remember when my mom read it to me for the first time when I was really little and being so scared that I wouldn’t let her read it to me again for many years. You see, I had a fear of monsters- especially the evil monkeys I always thought crawled on my curtains at night. As I got older, and my monster fears faded, I began to appreciate the story more and as an adult, I adore it for all the beautiful artwork as well:)

Crystle: I remember reading this book all the time

Nancy: I remember during my days of early childhood teaching, Where the Wild Things Are was the favorite among the children as if it was the velveeteen rabbit. What I remember best was a little girl named Laura wanting to know if we could put a little in the water table pushing it back and forth as if she was Max, and after she drew all the creatures from the book and pushed the boat one more time if her lunch would still be warm like Max’s dinner. She is now a young lady.

David: I remember how much fun it was to pretend to be a wild thing. I’d make faces and snarl and pretend the sheets of my bed were a cave as I slowly fell asleep. It seemed like a terrible bedtime storybook as it would always wake me up and make me want to play.

Christy: I remember being scared by the monsters…

Shaun: I remember when I was a kid and never had the money to travel reading this book and letting my imagination go. I would love to share this with my daughter.

Richard: I remember Max encountering various strange creatures, the “wild things”.

Renee: My 17 year old daughter said this was her favorite book when she was in grade school. She really wants to see the movie.

Laura: I remember that this was one of the only books I owned that had a cover that was worn from over-use.

Stephon: I remember reading this book during long rides to relatives homes out of town on holidays it always made time fly by…

Em: I remember that this is one of the only books i would ever check out from my elementary school’s library

Michelle: I remember Library day in Elementary School and racing to find this book before anyone else could get it. It was quite the popular book…everyone loved the illustrations.

Connie: I remember my dad reading this to me and my brothers when we were little. Then we knew a camping trip was ahead and that we would pretend we were the characters out in the wild……oh the good ol’ days.

Elissa: I remember my mom always loving to read this book to me….we read a ton of books, and this was always a highlight.

Stephen: I remember ordering the book in elementery school, and couldn’t wait for it to come.

Aaron: I remember drawing Max when I was little.

Amanda: I remember when i first read through the book, it was beautiful. And a little scary.

Nina: I remember being a fan of the illustrations and then when i read it i remember thinking it was not like the happy go lucky books i was used to reading. Still, i loved the illustrators books so i became a quick fan.

Nathan: I remember my mom baned this book

Chad: I remember being very little when the book was read to me, but it left such a lasting impression in my mind that I give it as a gift when I visit friends and family in the hospital with new born babies.

Ginny: I remember my imagination taking over in my mom’s basement: i saw a meter on the wall way up high. it’s gauges looked like big round eyes & a mean mouth. i was afraid of that basement all my life. until i was an adult, looked up at it in trepidation, & saw that it was just a little taller than me & only a meter.

Adan: I remember that this is one of the only books i would ever check out from my elementary school’s library

Elishia: I remember my mom read “Where the Wild things Are” to me and my little sister when I was bout six. I fell in love with Max and the world his imagination created when he was sent to his room for being bad. I love it so much, that for Halloween I asked my mom to make me Max for Halloween ( I’m a girl by the way). So it takes a special kind of book to make me want to dress up as a boy and continue to look back and think that was the best Halloween ever.

Laurie: I remember the book from when I was a kid, I think. I don’t have any fond memories of it or a good story to tell. I am just really excited to see how they turned this children’s classic of just 10 sentences into a full length movie. From what I have seen, it looks like it is going to be a wonderful tale.

Jennifer: I remember when I was in elementary school going to the library and looking for the stuff edanimals of the characters.

Ashley: Our family reads this book all the time! my 4 year old loves the part where they have a rumpus! Love all the illustrations! I have 2 little “wildest things of all” at home. What a great imaginative book! Can’t wait to see the movie!

John: I remember my mom reading the book to me. We’d make up sounds we thought the creatures would make. She often told me that I reminded her of the boy in the book. Reading that book with her is one of the few memories I have of living w/my mom – after the divorce I lived w/my dad. Good times w/mom!

Anne: I remember seeing the wild things dance on the page & hearing the wild rumpus the first time i read this when I was little. Now, as an ele librarian, I read this to the kinders every year and I ask them if they saw the “rumpus” too. They see & hear it too!!!

Brandy: I remember when every thing was up for grabs with your imagination and now it seems imagination is left not even for the children. I wish there were more wild things out there to be discovered…..

Chad: I remember reading this book in the library of my grade school and getting completely lost on time and having my parents freak out because i was hours late getting home…

The long journey Verona and Burt take is thought provoking, leaving viewers pleased that they tagged along for the ride.

It’s a long road home, or at least finding the perfect spot to call home. “Away We Go” proves just that point, as soon to be parents Verona De Tessant (Maya Rudolph) and Burt Farlander (John Krasinski) are on the trip of a lifetime to find the perfect place to start their family. Both are in their thirties, struggling with income and in need of some guidance. When Burt is informed by his jubilant parents that they are moving out of the county for a couple years, before the baby is even born, the couple decide to pick up and discover a new home and family on their own.

First stop on the journey is Phoenix. Albeit warmer climate than the chilly Colorado they have just fled, they find the reunion with Verona’s former boss/“friend”, Lily (Allison Janney) is enough to have them running out of town. After a quick visit with Verona’s sister they head to Madison, where Burt reunites with his “cousin” LN (Maggie Gyllenhaal) which turns out to be an eye opening experience on parenting. LN has a new age style of parenting, one that promotes a family bed, even finding strollers obtrusive. After a heated ending to the reunion Burt and Verona are affirmative that Madison can keep the lunatics and they will keep on searching.

On their last stop they visit college friends, rooming with them and their adoptive children. Out of all the destinations they find this to be the favorite. Even with the comforts of Canada, they still have not found the true comforts of home. Promising to love each other and be the bets parents they can be, Verona and Burt exchange vows. As the destinations come to an end they finally realize their past has leaded them to where their true home lies.

Sam Mendes brings us a light hearted comedy that will appeal to all audiences. Offering us likeable characters and assuring they were cast properly. An insightful film that is honest about the concerns many first time parents have. The pace at time seemed to stumble, but not long after the audience was drawn back in. Maya Rudolph and John Krasinski proved their ability to take on a lead role and had incredible chemistry. “Away We Go” is a poignant tale of true love. The long journey Verona and Burt take is thought provoking, leaving viewers pleased that they tagged along for the ride.
