MACGRUBER

Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he’s the only one tough enough for the job.

Assembling an elite team of experts—Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)—MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and The Final Destination

Comical hit for your young ones and another death defying attempt at a horror flick. Out on DVD today:

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: A scientist tries to solve world hunger only to see things go awry as food falls from the sky in abundance.

The Final Destination: On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O’Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave… escaping seconds before Nick’s frightening vision becomes a terrible reality. Thinking they’ve cheated death, the group has a new lease on life, but unfortunately for Nick and Lori, it is only the beginning. As his premonitions continue and the crash survivors begin to die one-by-one–in increasingly gruesome ways–Nick must figure out how to cheat death once and for all before he, too, reaches his final destination. The film marks the latest in the highly popular “Final Destination” series, and its first 3D installment, giving horror fans an especially visceral thrill ride.

Terminator Salvation and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

Two films, both had predecessors. Both not as good as the originals but still entertaining. Out on DVD today:

Terminator Salvation: The year is 2018.

Judgment Day has come and gone, leveling modern civilization. An army of Terminators roams the post-apocalyptic landscape, killing or collecting humans where they hide in the desolate cities and deserts. But small groups of survivors have organized into a Resistance, hiding in underground bunkers and striking when they can against an enemy force that vastly outnumbers them.

Controlling the Terminators is the artificial intelligence network Skynet, which became self-aware 14 years earlier and, in the blink of an eye, turned on its creators, unleashing nuclear annihilation on an unsuspecting world.

Only one man saw Judgment Day coming. One man, whose destiny has always been intertwined with the fate of human existence: John Connor (Christian Bale).

Now the world is on the brink of the future that Connor has been warned about all his life. But something totally new has shaken his belief that humanity stands a chance of winning this war: the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger from the past whose last memory is of being on death row before awakening in this strange, new world.

Connor must decide whether Marcus can be trusted. But as Skynet adapts new strategies to end the Resistance forever, Connor and Marcus must find common ground to take a stand against the onslaught–to infiltrate Skynet and meet the enemy head-on.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian: Night has fallen upon the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. The guides have gone home, the lights are out, the school kids are tucked in their beds… yet something incredible is stirring as former night guard Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) finds himself lured into his biggest, most imagination-boggling adventure yet in which history truly comes alive.

In this second installment of the Night at the Museum saga, Larry faces a battle so epic it could only unfold in the corridors of the world’s largest museum. Now, Larry must try to save his formerly inanimate friends from what could be their last stand amid the wonders of the Smithsonian, all of which, from the famous paintings on the walls to the rocket ships in the halls, suddenly have a mind of their own.

Duplicity, Sunshine Clearing, Fighting and Adventureland.

A good selection for the weekend. A romcom, 70s love story, action, and comedy…something for everyone. Out Tuesday:

Sunshine Clearing: Once the high school cheerleading captain who dated the quarterback, Rose Lorkowski now finds herself a thirty something single mother working as a maid. Her sister Norah is still living at home with their dad Joe, a salesman with a lifelong history of ill-fated get rich quick schemes.

Desperate to get her son into a better school, Rose persuades Norah to go into the crime scene clean-up business with her to make some quick cash. In no time, the girls are up to their elbows in murders, suicides and other…specialized situations. As they climb the ranks in a very dirty job, the sisters find a true respect for one another and the closeness they have always craved finally blossoms.

By building their own improbable business, Rose and Norah open the door to the joys and challenges of being there for one another — no matter what — while creating a brighter future for the entire Lorkowski family.

Adventureland: From the director of Superbad comes Adventureland, a smart, witty comedy we can all relate to. When James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) has to cancel his dream summer vacation and make some money for grad school, the only job he can get is at Adventureland, a tacky amusement park where the games are rigged and the rides make you hurl. But it’s where he meets Em (Kristen Stewart, Twilight), and his rollercoaster ride to nowhere turns into the best summer ever.

Fighting: Small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) knows firsthand that every day in New York City is a struggle to survive. So when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) gives him a chance to be something more in the brutal underground world of bare-knuckle street-fighting, Shawn decides that he has something worth fighting for and puts everything on the line to win. Every knockout brings him closer to the life he’s always wanted, but also traps him in a dangerous web he can’t escape.

Duplicity: Academy Award® winner Julia Roberts and Clive Owen star as two sexy spies-turned-corporate operatives who attempt to pull off one of the biggest heists ever. As the stakes rise in the ultimate game of cat-and-mouse, they’ll put everything on the line to remain one double-cross ahead of the rest.

Upstaging its predecessor with colorful new characters and energy the kids will love.

Ben Stiller is back as Larry Daley in “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian”, as the night guard who struggled with keeping peace between the breathing museum exhibits from dusk till dawn. Larry has found a name for himself through his own money making inventions known as Daley Devices, causing his schedule to become so hectic that his museum visits are diminished. When he happens to make a pop in return he finds the museum has boxed up many of its artifacts. Larry learns the museum is undertaking renovations to a new modern level, one where the artifacts will no longer be needed. All have been boxed and are ready to be shipped to the Smithsonian. Larry is discouraged by this, but tells his friends he will do what he can to bring them home. When Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams) informs Larry the tablet will be left behind and his friends will no longer wander the nights his guilt begins to set in.

Following Larry’s museum visit he receives a phone call from Jedediah Smith (Owen Wilson), he informs Larry the battle is on at the Smithsonian. Apparently the monkey stole the tablet and now the largest historic museum is coming to life. Larry rushes to his friend’s aid and runs into many troubles along the way. We are introduces to a variety of new characters from Ivan the Terrible to Al Capone. One particular new character stands out, Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams), who brings some life to the museum with her freewill attitude and courageous antics. With the help of the lovely Ms. Earhart and his loyal friends can Larry restore the museum to its peaceful nights before all hell breaks out?

“Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” certainly upstaged its predecessor. It offered tons of adventure and thrills that the whole family will enjoy. Amy Adams has a charming performance as Amelia Earhart and has fiery chemistry with Ben Stiller. Bill Hader added a jolt of energy to the film that was lacking from the original. “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” is much busier and louder than the first, but what director Shawn Levy has to offer is everything the kids will love.

The pair meets as they work a summer job at Adventureland Park and find passion more exciting than the games they are running. The film takes you back to those awkward days of being unsure of yourself. Filled with trials and tribulations you see these angst teens just trying to deal with life. James lands a job in the games area when his search for a summer job leads him to dead ends, except for at the theme park. While working at Adventureland you are introduced to a wide variety of humorous characters, including the manager of the park Bobby (Bill Hader), who seems a bit eccentric and his strange significant other, Paulette (Kristen Wiig).

Not only is the park a place to earn a paycheck, but it turns out to be the grounds of affairs and lies. Who knew drama could come from such a fun place? During these hot summer days James begins to be drawn to Emily who seems withdrawn from society. When James feels rejected by Emily he agrees to go on a date with the hot rides girl, Lisa (Margarita Levieva). Caught in a triangle between lust and love what will James do? It’s an adventurous ride that takes many twists and turns. Back to the days of boy likes girl, girl likes different boy and so on so forth.

“Adventureland” is an enjoyable ride, but towards the end you find yourself ready to get off. A lot of the relationships and characters are undeveloped, but that aside they were all entertaining in their own aspect. Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg had great compatibility and handled the teenage angst to perfection. The film flawlessly captured the decade. Not to mention it had some of the best music from its period. “Adventureland” offered great humor, but could have been cut back twenty minutes and would not have been so extended.

Way to kick of spring. Forgetting Sarah Marshall offers a great romantic comedy to see. This film is brought to you by the Apatow clan, with a few new additions. Jason Segel stars as love struck Peter Bretter, who is head over heels for his TV star girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). In a grand opening, Peter is dumped by his beau, while in the buff. Not quick to cover up you get a very good glance at Jason’s bod and it may be more than one person can handle, but I found it rather amusing. Way to go Jason, step out of that box and show some skin, they show enough of females, why not of males?

While grieving over the loss of his long time girlfriend, Peter decides that escaping to paradise may be the only relief for his pain. He leaves on a whim to Hawaii with no prior reservations. He arrives at a beautiful resort, where he meets an exotic girl, Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis). After arriving at the resort he soon runs into his ex, and her now new boyfriend, who is not so new. Peter soon learns that Sarah’s boy toy is not a new boyfriend, but a companion Sarah has had around for sometime. This helps Peter in his grief process, as does his new friend Rachel. While on a beautiful island in paradise can Peter heal his heart and move on? What will his friendship with Rachel lead to?

Jason Segel has an amazing screenplay and performance. The chemistry between Jason and Mila is very steamy. You are rooting Peter on to get his life on track and to start the healing process. We have all been there, broken hearted and searching for resolve. This film takes you on that journey in a humorous manner. Compared to Apatow’s previous hits, this movie does not pale in comparison. It has the same humor and cast including Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill and Bill Hader, all who add another layer to this comical flick. This is a must see and a great comedy. Here’s to wishing for more from this great Apatow clan.
