REVIEW

Every couple goes through their own share of drama. But most don’t travel to an exotic locale to share their stories. In “Couples Retreat” Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kritsen Bell) announce to their close friends that they are on the verge of divorcing and the only thing they can do to salvage what marriage they have left is to go to Eden. Eden is located in the Caribbean on the beautiful blue waters. If they can convince their friends to go with them they will get a great group rate and get to participate in water activities, delicious cuisines and negotiable couple’s skill building.

Upon arrival the couples are in awe of the amazing location and the huts they will be staying in right on the water. At their first dinner they look forward to the following days activities until they receive their itinerary, which consist of 6am couples skills building followed by therapy sessions. When they learn the skill building and therapy is not negotiable to enjoy the entire amenities of the facility they decide to partake. As they talk about their feelings they find that they have a lot to learn about each other and growing to do as a couple. Dave (Vince Vaughn) and Ronnie (Malin Akerman) find that they don’t communicate as much as they use to; Joey (Jon Favreau) and Lucy (Kristin Davis) find that they are stuck in their marriage and seem very unhappy as they have been together since high school; Shane (Faizon Love) and his girlfriend Trudy (Kali Hawk) learn they have nothing in common as all Shane does is talk about his wife who he recently split from and the couple responsible for the entire trip take the sessions to heart and can’t seem to enjoy a minute in paradise.

Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn do a great job at entertaining the movie watchers. This film is not a slam dunk, but you need to go in and understand what you are watching. It is another comedy that is full of obscene motives, gestures, discussions and anything you come to expect from Vince Vaughn. “Couples Retreat” is a comedy that most couples will enjoy; I know my husband and I found ourselves laughing continuously. The scenery alone is worth the cost of a ticket price. Bora Bora was a beautiful location to film at and added that much needed taste of paradise to a rather bitter sweet subject of a troubled marriage.

Couples Retreat, The Time Traveler's Wife, A Serious Man and The Stepfather out today!

It’s a family affair in many ways this week. Out on DVD today:

Couples Retreat: The comedy follows four Midwestern couples who embark on a journey to a tropical island resort. While one of the couples is there to work on their marriage, the other three set out to jet ski, spa and enjoy some fun in the sun. They soon discover that participation in the resorts couples therapy is not optional. Suddenly, their group-rate vacation comes at a price. What follows is a hilarious look at real world problems faced by all couples.

The Time Traveler’s Wife: Clare (Rachel McAdams) has been in love with Henry (Eric Bana) her entire life. She believes they are destined to be together, even though she never knows when they will be separated: Henry is a time traveler–cursed with a rare genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through the years with no control. Despite the fact that Henry’s travels force them apart with no warning, and never knowing when they will be reunited, Clare desperately tries to build a life with her one true love.

A Serious Man: “A Serious Man” is the story of an ordinary man’s search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and “F-Troop” is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous colleagues, Sy Ableman (Fred Melamed), who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry.

Larry’s unemployable brother Arthur (Richard Kind) is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny (Aaron Wolf) is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah (Jessica McManus) is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. While his wife and Sy Ableman blithely make new domestic arrangements, and his brother becomes more and more of a burden, an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry’s chances for tenure at the university.

Also, a graduate student seems to be trying to bribe him for a passing grade while at the same time threatening to sue him for defamation. Plus, the beautiful woman next door torments him by sunbathing nude. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person – a mensch – a serious man?

The Stepfather: Michael Harding (Penn Badgley) returns home from military school to find his mother (Sela Ward) happily in love and living with her new boyfriend, David (Dylan Walsh). As the two men get to know each other, Michael becomes more and more suspicious of the man who is always there with a helpful hand. Is he really the man of her dreams or could David be hiding a dark side?
