Year One, Imagine That and My Life in Ruins

A comedy, a greek romance and a childhood imagination all collaborate to make up this week’s DVD releases. Hitting shelves today:

Year One: When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.

Imagine That: Evan Danielson is a successful financial executive who has more time for his blackberry than his seven-year-old daughter. When he has a crisis of confidence and his career starts going down the drain, however, he finds the solution to all his problems in his daughter’s imaginary world.

My Life in Ruins: Immerse yourself in this sunny, uplifting romantic comedy starring Oscar® nominee Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) and Academy Award® winner Richard Dreyfuss. Vardalos delivers a charming performance as Georgia, a recently laid-off — though anything but laid-back — history professor-turned-travel guide to a motley crew of hilariously crass tourists. Georgia is fed up and ready to give up — until her new confidant Irv (Dreyfuss) opens her eyes and heart to a simple fact: There’s no finer way for a woman to find her kefi (a.k.a. mojo) than to lose herself in the arms of the “Greek god” (Alexis Georgoulis) who’s been hiding right under her nose!

“My Life in Ruins” is a stellar romantic comedy where ancient history and love meet.

“My Life in Ruins” is a stellar romantic comedy where ancient history and love meet. A Greek tour guide named Georgia (My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos) attempts to recapture her mojo by guiding a typical group of tourists around Greece and showing them the beauty of her native land through her eyes. Only problem is she is kind of boring and does not know how to enjoy life. As she sets out on this tour she has the stereotypical tourists: the Americans, the Australians, the Gator from Florida, the elder couple, the rich family with the rebellious daughter, and the man of 100 jokes. Richard Dreyfuss is Irv; the funnyman on the tour alone after his wife has passed away.

After several rough days on the road, Irv bonds with Georgia and helps her to relax and open herself to enjoy life and possibly find love. Once Georgia relaxes you see her weight is lifted. She begins to morph into another woman. Her tourists begin to love her and she manages to open their eyes to wonders of an exotic foreign land while she is beginning to see the world through a new set of eyes. Through these eyes she begins to see Poupi (Alexis Georgoulis), the bus driver in a new light. The two have majestic chemistry and it is not bad that Poupi looks like a Greek God.

“My Life in Ruins” was a pleasant surprise. I had butterflies watching Georgia open herself to love and finding it in the most unexpected places. A warm welcome goes to Alexis Georgoulis who has a break out performance in this film. The comical stunts offered by the tourists, including former Saturday Night Live star Rachel Dratch, were dead on. Director Donald Petrie does a fantastic job, and lives up to the standards of his previous work in “Miss Congeniality” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. Not just a chick flick, all will enjoy this fun tourist ride and all the humor that comes along with it. Pack your bags and head to the ruins, you won’t be disappointed.
