Kate Beckinsale is putting her boots back on in her latest action/thriller, “Whiteout”. Carrie Stetko (Beckinsale), a U.S. marshal assigned to Antarctica, is forced to investigate a murder three days before the Antarctic winter begins or get stuck for six months. She crosses paths with a U.N. operative Robert Pryce (Gabriel Macht), also investigating the murder. As the killing spree continues, she must chase down suspects before it is too late.
Before long Steko finds herself being attacked by the killer and left for dead in a storm. Managing to find refuge comes at a price of severe frostbite damage. After a short recovery Steteko continues to pry for information and eventually catches her man. But will it be in time for her to escape the bitter cold. Also, is it possible there was more than one mastermind behind these malicious murders and why were these victims chosen to meet their fate early.
The best I can describe “Whiteout” is that it is “I Know What You Did Last Summer” on ice and that is not hot! It was a bland mess from the beginning. Whiteout’s opening scenes consisted of Beckinsale undressing for a good ten minutes for a shower. Way to capture the audience’s attention, I was needless to say not intrigued. I would also like to know how it is plausible that an outdoor fight sequence can occur in Antarctica in negative 45 degree temperatures and snow blowing so bad that you can’t see six inches in front of you. The storyline was outlandish and not even Beckinsale’s ass shots could save this film. Sorry but it was a waste of a perfectly good evening. If you want to see it for the comical laughs then go ahead, but remember it is not suppose to be a comedy.
