Martin Scorsese has given us many films to love. Most recently “The Departed” which was one of my personal favorites, however I feel we have lost something on “Shutter Island”. Its 1954 and two U.S. marshals are ordered to Shutter Island after the disappearance of a patient from Boston’s Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) has been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders if his visit is part of a twisted scheme by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical and illegal to downright sinister.
While Teddy is busily interviewing all the patients and looking for a conspiracy, his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) begins to display concerns regarding Teddy’s intensity on this case. Teddy’s perceptive investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. Communication is cut off to the mainland following a hurricane. Many patients escape causing mass chaos to the already abnormal hospital. After a rather strange change of events Teddy begins to doubt everything – his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.
“Shutter Island” had many twist and turns, but don’t expect the unexpected. This slow two hour and eighteen minute films feels like you are living it out in slow motion. Some scenes are dank and dull that makes it drag even more. Half way through most of the audience will figure out the mystery plaguing Shutter Island which makes you that more upset when the film finally ends. Being a huge Scorsese fan I was disappointed in this film. Leonardo DiCaprio offered a stellar performance and captured the audience’s attention. Michelle Williams was a pivotal key to the plot as Dolores and proved once again to be an amazing performer. I tried to get lost on Shutter Island, but am sad to say even with its ominous tone and dreary setting I found myself dreading its predictable tale.

Couldn’t agree more, was very disappointed with the ending!! By the way, just registered for passes to MacGruber, looks pretty funny. Keep up the good work!
This is a movie with a great level of care and consideration. I would say this movie dragged, but I would not call this a predictable movie. The only way you would be disappointed in the end is if you did not pay attention to the full layout. This is for mystery lovers more than for horror lovers.
lol, funny that this review gives DiCaprio props for his performance, when most of the people I talked to (and read reviews I’ve read) conclude this is DiCaprio’s weakest performance yet. He seems to have taken his Departed character with him along with the ride, but with even less emotion than typical DiCaprio.
Then again, I never really care what reviewers think. I actually enjoyed this movie, except for DiCaprio’s absolutely terrible fake Boston accent.
could someone please share the ending with me? are “spoilers” allowed on this site? went on a date wth my hubby last night and was VERY disappointed in the movie so we actually walked out. it was late…we were paying a sitter…and just didn’t think it was worth wasting anymore time. but now i am reading about the “surprise” ending and twists, and i’m so curious to know how it ended. we walked out after Chuck fell off the rocks and the Marshal (Leonardo) climbed down to look for him. all of those rats came pouring out of the rocks; Leonardo climbs in, and … i have no idea what happens thereafter… Please fill me in! THANKS!!
Tanya, if you walked out then you missed the entire movie. The ending is the most important part of the plot.
If you missed the ending, you are a truly blessed person. Make up your own ending and enjoy it. Whatever you imagine cannot possibly be worse than the actual ending. I was furious when I left, it was 2+ hours of my life without any entertainment or merit whatsoever.
The only thing I can compare it to is that season of the “Dallas” TV show where Bobby woke up in the last episode and revealed the whole season had been his personal dream.
“Shutter Island” is actually worse and more stupid than that.
I agree with TK. This movie is for mystery lovers and not horror lovers. Ive just seen the movie and still wondering whats happened at the end cos it still could be either way.
