In conclusion it’s a cute story with some originality, but a little on the long side.

“The Five Year Engagement” stands by its title with a trying tale of the obstacle faced when trying to tie the knot. Tom Solomon (Jason Segel) is a successful chef who meets the girl of his dreams Violet Barnes (Emily Blunt). A year following their courtship he romantically proposes to her which she gladly accepts. Their engagement party is a hit and the couple looks forward to a future of love and happiness. From here things get a little complicated.

When Violet receives a job offer she can’t refuse to the University of Michigan the couple pack up their life in San Francisco and relocate for her to pursue her dream. Tom quickly learns that his success in San Francisco is not easy to find in Michigan and settles for a less appealing deli job. He begins to resent relocating and abating his dream of being head chef in his own restaurant. Eventually the tension builds which only causes a wedge between the couple.

As the months go by and eventually years the wedding plans keep getting pushed back. Neither party seems to have the motivation to plan the most important day of their lives. Everyone else around them seems to be moving forward with marriages and children being born, not to mention the loss of loved ones. Eventually the relationship becomes so strained that it may be too much to bounce back from.

“The Five Year Engagement” has very comical and endearing moments, but at the same time it is not a homerun comedy. Jason Segel and Emily Blunt had great chemistry and were comical riots paired together. The angst in the end left a sour taste in my mouth and I could feel the overrun of time spent in this drawn out engagement. Perhaps if they had cut a year off the engagement or skipped ahead I would have been more comfortable in the end. In conclusion it’s a cute story with some originality, but a little on the long side.

Another story of two people thrown together to somehow display that they are soul mates, but all it did was make me dislike these movies even more.

I’m starting to feel bad for Nicholas Sparks. A gifted novel writer who has offered some wonderful love stories in print are not transferring well to the big screen. At least not since 2004 for me with “The Notebook”. Looks like “The Lucky One” is following the same path. In this romantic drama Zac Efron is Logan a Marine who during his three tours in Iraq finds a photo of a beautiful woman. When he searches for who the photo belongs to with no takers he believes that she is somehow his guardian angel and if he makes it home will do whatever it takes to find her.

One home and following some investigating he discovers the girl in the photo is in North Carolina and travels there to meet her. When he meets Beth (Taylor Schilling) he finds it hard to be honest about why he traveled across the states to the K9 kennell and training club she helps run. Being honest about why he is in North Carolina does not come easy and he finds himself more attracted to the beautiful woman. In an attempt to remain close to her he accepts a job at the kennell and starts a friendship with Beth.

Undoubtly there is an attraction between the two, one that is compromised by Beth’s former relationship with the town’s Sherriff and the fact that they share a young child together. Like any love story things get complicated and it will be up to the love Beth and Logan share to survive the latest struggle.

“The Lucky One” was overkill on the romance and any attraction between the couple felt very forced. I did not feel the chemistry between Efron and Schilling. The character of Beth seemed to be struggling with more post traumatic stress from the war then Logan the actual marine. The entire bases of the relationship they shared I found awkward. I was really rooting for this Sparks’ novel to be a good film, but it does not jive. Another story of two people thrown together to somehow display that they are soul mates, but all it did was make me dislike these movies even more.

“Lockout” has a very minute amount of cheesy comedy that will have you laughing at it, but maybe that is the point.

So it looks like the first real action film of 2012 is more of a comedy. “Lockout” is a futuristic disaster with more cheesy laughs then the “Three Stooges” may offer this weekend. Guy Pearce is Snow, a quick witted insider who finds himself on the wrong side of the law after being wrongly convicted of conspiracy against the United States and possibly murder. His sentencing does not go before a jury and is swiftly handed to him. He will serve his sentence at MS One (Maximum Security) an orbiting space prison where the most atrocious criminals are held and where the action will go down.

MS One has been the subject of controversy. To get a better idea of the effects on the inmates the president’s daughter Emilie Warnock (Maggie Grace) goes on a ridiculous humanitarian mission to MS One. Things go horribly wrong during her mission of course. The prison containing 500+ inmates is quickly out of control and all inmates are on the loose. Emilie and her entourage are taken hostage and the negotiations begin.

This is where hero Snow is brought into the saga. Snow finds out one of the inmates might be able clear his name so he agrees to help. They will get him into MS One with one mission only, to save the president’s daughter. This task he takes on lightly but gets his mission done and then redirects his focus on finding his friend Mace who can hopefully help resolve the conviction he received. With many crazed inmates he will have to take action quickly if he expects to escape safely.

There are so many ridiculous questions left for me after this film. Why is a maximum security prison only guarded by a handful of guards and a few technical savvy scientists? Whose idea was it for the president’s daughter to handle this mission? How can you skydive from space and land in New York City? It’s a very poor misguided attempt at making a successful film with a very uninspiring script. “Lockout” has a very minute amount of cheesy comedy that will have you laughing at it, but maybe that is the point. I went in not expecting much and have to say “Lockout” delivered. If you miss out on this gem consider yourself lucky.

Fans of the Pie movies will relate and enjoy what “American Reunion” has done. It is a perfect way to round things up and bring things to a final end...or at least I hope so.

“American Pie” came out when I started high school and I remember it being a film that everyone talked about and could relate to on some level. Now over a decade later they are having a reunion in “American Reunion” bringing back all the original players. Years have past and lives have changed, but some things never change. Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) are married with a two year old and seem to have complications finding the spark their relationship use to have. They make plans to rekindle the fire when they return home for the reunion.

Their plans for a romantic weekend go awry when Jim meets up with the boys Oz (Chris Klein), Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and wild child Stifler (Seann William Scott). Reliving the old days and taking shots at Stifler’s request it is more than the married man can handle. Stifler is still supplying the liquor and is the life of the party, Oz has a successful career and a superficial girlfriend, Finch is a traveling man who is living the life of mystique and Kevin has settled down into a suburban life he loves.

Get this group back together and things just get crazy. As the reunion draws closer friendships will be tested, but this groups connection is too strong to let one weekend destroy it. “American Reunion” was a blast from the past and opens the Pie craze up to a new generation. There have been multiple versions and sequels to the original, but I found this one to be my favorite. As I anticipate attending my ten year reunion this year, and having changed so much in that time I could relate very much to this film and the humor it offered. For some reason whenever you get around those high school friends your are pulled back into those memories of how care-free you were. It’s nice to be reminded of that.

“American Reunion” does have a few flaws. There is an overkill of forced chemistry between Oz and Heather (Mena Suvari). Not to mention the return of Vicky (Tara Reid), which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. There was not a whole lot of girl time in this film and it was pretty much limited to the boys and the lifestyle they are or were living. Eugene Levy (Jim’s Dad) was a riot as the recently single man who is ready to venture out into the dating world. Fans of the Pie movies will relate and enjoy what “American Reunion” has done. It is a perfect way to round things up and bring things to a final end…or at least I hope so.

Synopsis:

The director and writer/star of Forgetting Sarah Marshall reteam for the irreverent comedy The Five-Year Engagement. Beginning where most romantic comedies end, the new film from director Nicholas Stoller, producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) and Rodney Rothman (Get Him to the Greek) looks at what happens when an engaged couple, Jason Segel and Emily Blunt, keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle. The film was written by Segel and Stoller.
